Hey soberlunatic, welcome to the site.
I had a total colectomy with ileorectal anastamosis February, 2005. I suffered with constipation my whole life. Right before my surgery, It was a blessing if I had a BM every 3 weeks or more. I tried everything to help my bowels along, but always came up short.
I was in the hospital for 6 days. From what I can remember, my surgery lasted 4 hours. Didn't have much pain while I was in there, or after I got home. I had an epidural for the first few days for pain control, then a PCA (pain pump). After I was discharged, I was given a prescription for Percocet, that I never even took. I stayed at home to recoup for 1.5 weeks, then went back to work.
Currently, I am able to eat WHATEVER I want, without worrying about it backing up. I have a BM once a day, usually. Sometimes twice a day, if I really ate a ton the day before.
Would be happy to answer any other questions!
~Take care,
