I have had my ostomy for just over one month. Since I've been home (abouty 2 weeks) I have noticed that the skin under the appliace wafer is pink to reddish when I change appliances. The nurse that comes in to check up on me (and to also tend to my unhealed incision) is concerned that I have a reaction to the wafer ahesive. Or maybe some pinkness is normal???? I do experience some itching after a couple of days.

I started with Coloplast appliances, and then went to the Hollinger, both without the desired result.

I have been changing my appliance every 2 or 3 days so as to not aggirvate the situation. Last time I left off the appliance for about 30-40 minutes and my skin looked much better. Obviously I can't do that very often! I use a barrier (non-alcoholic) before I place the wafer on my skin, plus I do not use any soap when I clean the area.

Does anyone have any ideas or share their experience when they had an adhesive reaction on the skin?

ive had mine for three weeks.  im also allergic to adhesives but the nurses at the hospital kept putting regular tape over my iv instead of the paper tape...i even had it written on my bracelet...and my whole arm was red and itchy.  my skin is pretty red after i remove it...it also has bumps kinda like razor burn. oh and did i mention it itches like CRAZY!!!  i have to change mine everyother day to let me skin "breathe" so it doesnt get too bad.  my nurse had said to try the white wafers instead of the beige.  but hollister doesnt have them.  i think coloplast does but i havent tried them yet.  i also use a skin barrier and i dont use soap because soap makes me break out also.

I've has my ostomy since March and in the hospital when the ET nurse came to change my wafer for the first time.  The skin was almost purple under the wafer and very itchy.  She said I was having a reaction to the adhesive in the wafer, and switched me to a Coloplast system which still seems to be working for me.

Hope you get some relief soon, I know the itch can cause you to go a little nutty.

dear Purple -

Wondering what Coloplast appliance version you are using???  Do you have a model number?  I have tried one of their models without success.

BTW - It has not tuned purple, as yet. It doesn't get itchy until day 2, and that has not been too severe, but concerned that it will get more so, as my skin becomes more irritated.

Here is the info off of the boxes I have, it is a two piece system:

Coloplast Assura Extra Skin Barrier/Extended Wear #2832

Coloplast Assura Bags 2822

Hope this help, its what the nurse sent me home with and my local drug store was able to order them in for me.

I have an adhesive allergy but have never had any problems with the coloplast assura (one piece bag with a "roll up" type closure), and the hollister adhesive ring.

I will discuss these suggestions with my ET nurse, and ask for some samples to try these out.

Altho - if anyone esle has any other ideas - I'm open!!!
