Help! My daughter has skin breakdown!

I am new to this forum, so please be patient everyone! (I am a frequent DragonPacker, though!) Mt 6 year daughter has been at Childrens Hosp. Boston for 8 weeks after an emergency colectomy,  her small intestine perferating and she ended up with not only a right stoma, but a left one. The left one is flat to her skin and runs like crazy. She has a nasty skin irriation beneath it because her output is so liquidy. We are doing the stoma powder, then no sting barrier to make it a paste over it, but it's getting worse, it seems. Any suggestions? We are working with our stoma nurse, but i was hoping someone might have some trick up their sleeve! Please -anyone???

am still new to the colectomy thing (only have had it for about 3 or 4 weeks) but about a week ago i also had really bad skin irration and my nurse told me to use DuoDerm(extra thin) and that has helped me alot... i dont know if its like the no sting barrier you are using but you might ask your nurse about it.

Hi LUDO. I am sorry to hear that your daughter is having these health problems at such a young age :-(

Is she using a convex flange? if not ask the stoma nurse about them. I heard that they work well for a flush stoma. I was going to suggest Eakin seals but I am not too sure if they are the right thing for a flush stoma. its worth asking the nurse about them though and see what she says. One thing that might realy help with the sore skin is no sting cavalon spray,it protects the skin from output and also helps the flange to stick better too.

Hi Ludo

Has your daughters stoma been measured recently, as it does get smaller after the op. My partner had the same trouble and it was because the hole, which fits over the stoma, on the bag was cut too big, his suppliers then cut it smaller so that the input was not going onto his skin. He also tried duo derm and that helped as well. Now he puts on cavilon cream, which acts as a barrier.

Sorry I didn't find your post earlier. I am an Ostomate myself (Colostomy) for 6 years now. Not long ago I had a similar skin outburst and a Canadian friend of mine told me to dab Pepto Bismol around my stoma and let it dry throughly, then apply my appliance as usual. Low & behold, right away the burning & discomfort were gone & when it came time to change my appliance, my skin was completely healed. For me it was definately the "trick up the sleeve".

Walmart has NexCare spray-on barrier for about $5.  I've also heard about the PeptoBismal working well.  Check online for the non-adhesive EHOB flange, too ... that may give her skin a rest.

So sorry ya'll are having to deal with this!  Let us know what you find that works.  Best Wishes for speedy relief.  :-)
