hi Everyone. I am looking for anyone that may have had a similar experience as me. I had a koch pouch for 27 years. I had little or no problems until last year. Since then I had two major revisions in NYC. Neither worked. I had an ostomy bag put on last week. I am very depressed and feel like it is huge and I may never have a normal life. Does it smell? Does everyone look at it? What will life be like when I want to leave the house (not yet, only one week post op.) Has anyone gone from the Koch pouch to a bag?

i don't know what a koch pouch is, but i just had a bag installed two weeks ago. been out in public twice this week and no, nobody "looked at it." i wear all the same clothes now as i did before the surgery. there are some tricks though i've found--buttonup shirts with designs (lots of lines, plaid etc) on them seem to "hide" the bag quite well, while t-shirts will show the bag. depending on where your stoma is you could wear your shirt over your pants instead of tucking it in. stuff like that...you'll figure it out just like i did. i notice the clear bags tend to smell a bit of plastic, but the cloth covered bags don't seem to smell at all so i'd recommend those. also use a bag with a filter so when you pass gas the bag doesn't fill up like a balloon lol. one piece systems fit closer to the body then two piece so they don't stick out as much, but for me two piece is the way to go. it's all about
figuring out what works for you. good luck

I have not heard of the bag with a filter. I am meeeting with the ostomy nurse in a few days. Filling up with air is one of the things that I am worried about
!!! Otherwise I think I can handle it. Thanks! I will ask about
the filter.

Hi Robby!
When you see your ostomey nurse ask for samples of ostomy bags. If they don't have any ask her which of the 2 piece systems they would recommend from the Hollister line and Coloplast. Once you have the item numbers you can call these 2 companies and request samples from them. some have velcro inclosers so you won't have the clip to deal with. However if you have a watery out put you may want to stick with a clip for the time being. The are also liquid deoderant you can put into your bag but it stops the filter from working.
No one knows I have the bag unless I tell them. When it comes to to sex I fold it up 3 times and tape it down with athelic tape. When swiming I cover it with waterproof tape.
