recent ileostomy

I just got out of the hospital where I had to have a total colectomy with an ileostomy where the surgeon saved my rectum for a later J pouch surgery. The rectum was the most inflamed, multiple ulcerations and they say that they can do the second of the third surgery in 3 months. My question is that I have had on several occasions a bloody mucous coming from my rectum and was wondering if this is normal. It seems to happen more after I eat, and I need to eat as much as possible (I am 5'6" and 90 lbs) I had a heck of a time getting out of the hospital because my white count was so high, and they can't explain why it's so high, but they didn't even send me home with an antibiotic, just I have to check for a fever 4 times a day. I am also on 5 mg prednisone for 5 days and then off. I would really appreciate feedback and have really seen how this board can calm alot of fears.

If your white count is high, that means you have an infection. You should call your doctor tomorrow and tell him what's going on, so he can get you on an antibiotic, if needed.

I'm surprised that they want to keep your rectum. Mine was also diseased and would do that, even after I had an ileostomy and wasn't using it. I ended up having it and my colon removed, because they never got better.

Mucous from the rectum is to be expected. Your rectum will still produce the mucous which used to help slide the poop out. It shows it's still doing it's job. The blood is probably just left over from the surgery. The mucous is something that surgeons forget to inform people about. Eating probably starts the peristaltic motion off and pushes the mucous out which is why you notice it more around that time.

The high white count might be a concern but as long as you're keeping an eye on your temp and report in if it gets worse, I'd trust the docs on that one.

This is unrelated to your questions but I wanted to share this with you anyway because you and new to the bag...I am new as well. I wanted to shorten my bag a little when i went for a walk to I used medical tape to tape my bag in half. I pulled the clip up and taped it to the underneath part of my bag. This worked great. However, when I went to pull the tape off my bag ripped in half...oops! I had no idea that I could not put tape on these bags. I just thought I would share this lesson with you.

PS. I am 9 days out of surgery and I have had 4 tiny bloody bm's. This is normal.

Yes, mucous is normal, because your rectum is still inflamed this could be causing the blood. My partner still has his rectum, which is checked once a year, and it is still inflamed with UC. He also has bloody mucous and our doctor has given him Predsol Suppositories which he inserts once or twice a day, and although doesn,t stop the bleeding completely it calms it down.
