Has anyone had a parastomal hernia?  If so did you have the surgery to repair this?  THanks for any info!!

I will answer my own question so everyone will know what it is. A parastomal hernia is a hernia below the stoma. The hernia can sometimes become quite large and show on your abdomen. Sometimes the hernia can become intwined with the colon or the small bowel. I saw a surgeon yesterday and he told me that my hernia is twisted with my colon--the colon is bunched up inside the hernia sak. I have to have this surgically repaired. This has been causing problems for me when i pass my stool. Hurts alot!! I hope no one ever gets one of these--and I hope this helps out other people.

hi, i have a hernia on my stoma site and is quite large. it is sooo noticable on my stomach, i am very self concious about it. i have recently been to see my surgeon and she is repairing it at same time as my reversal. it is so painful.

I am so sorry you both are suffering in so much pain with these hernias.

When will they be surgically repairing yours?  Does limiting your diet to soft foods help your pain?  How about drugs, like maybe Bentyl to ease spasms?

When is your reversal scheduled for?  (I just read your other post and saw that it is scheduled for the end of January.)  Have you been able to take anything to help your pain?  Is it painful all the time or just when you eat?

I have had my ileostomy for 23 years and have been really lucky in this respect.  I'm curious tho.  I've had my share of adhesions and partial bowel obstructions due to kinks or adhesions.  When this happens to me, I go on a clear liquid diet and take pain meds and it usually passes in a few days.  But it is extremely painful.  I have some idea what that kind of pain is like and really wish there was an easy fix for you.  You both are in my thoughts...

Thank you for your kind words. I just take painkillers but there is not much else they can do. I also wear a corsinel which is like really tight elasticated underwear, this gives great support it's the best thing ever! My stoma nurse got them on script for me.

This has been one long battle for me i am 35 and i had my bowel damaged during the birth of my second son, who was born in feb 05. My anal sphincter snapped and this was repaired in feb 06. So i had the ileostomy performed to let the sphincter heal. So here i am nearly 3 yrs down the line still off work, waiting to get some of my confindence and life back.

I am having my surgery Dec. 3.  Very nervous.  And yes staying on soft foods helps with the passing of the stools and the pain.  They also have me on a very stong antibiotic.  On top of all this, my horse kicked me this week-just missing my stoma.  Thank god he didn't hit it or I would of been in the emergency room having emergency surgery.  darn horse!!  He got mad at me because I put his oats down to chase the dog.  He wanted his oats know not after the episode with the dog.  I will never make that mistake again!!  Good luck to you gillcom on your reversal.  I wish my colostomy was reversable but unfortunately I lost my rectum to crohn's disease.  My rectum was unrepairable.  Its okay!!  I'm am still here to be with my family!!  We do what we need to do!!  God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!
