I am 7 weeks post op and have not tried veg's or fruits. I am REALLY missing salads ALOT!!!! How long after did you all try salads and also fruits and veg's? As long as I chew, chew, chew then is that the way to avoid blockages?

Try any foods you want but those that you suspect might be problammatic, try them in small amounts. I never had problems with fresh fruits, vegetables or even popcorn with my temp ostomy. If something doesn't work for you today, try it again in 2 weeks.

So is it okay now to try foods that have seeds like strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes etc. I have avoided any seeds since I was dx'd with UC a couple of years ago. Popcorn.....wow. That would make me a nervous wreck so that is awesome that you can do it. Popcorn would make my belly blow up huge even before I as dx'd with UC. I avoided it (even then) at all costs.

I ate EVERYTHING with an ostomy and I continue to eat EVERYTHING with a jpouch. Some pouchers or ostomates will have problems with some foods but that should not scare you from trying them. We are all different. I am so glad I took my surgeon's advice which was go out and eat whatever you want. I have not found any food to cause me problems, I don't chew well, and I am often eating quickly as I am in a hurry. Use common sense but don't set yourself up for eliminating foods because you have heard others's experiences or have been told they aren't for ostomates.

you are past the low residue diet point so you can start eating whatever. I eat stuff with seeds, like strawberries and such, i also eat salad and fruit. I don't eat the skin off fruits, although i didn't do that before. And if eat somethinglike pineapple or orange, i just spit the fibery parts out, i don't like them anyway. As for lettuce, i buy the kind that is shredded, the kind i buy is from fresh express and it's called salad shreds, then you don't have to worry if you don't chew good enough, lol.
i don't eat popcorn, havent' tried it, i don't like popcorn though. I don't eat nuts though, those can be a problem i have heard, as can seeds. I don't eat sesame seeds. The body cannot digest most nuts or seeds, so they come out (of everyone) the same way they went in.
If you eat something you think might cause a problem, drink lots and lots of water afterwards!

Most blockages occur from adhesions (scar tissue) and are not food related. If you have a healthy small intestine, then you should be eating your fruits and veggies. So, enjoy!
