Another question about output after you eat

My daughter notices that she can usually feel her output. She mentioned that sometimes it feels like it is burning. It doesn't look like anything is leaking but she says it almost feels like that. Is it just the stoma outputting that she feels? It just annoys her (and maybe frightens her a bit). Is this OK? The last thing she had was a baked potato with some sour cream.

It took me a while to figure this one out when I experienced it. In my case, it was the heat from the output being transmitted through the bag. Intestinal contents are at core body temperature; skin is quite a bit lower. So the difference definitely registers.

If she really pays attention when the stoma acts up while doing a change, she'll probably find that she can't actually feel the output coming out--it's the temperature shift once it gets to the bag that does it.

does she feel the "burning" around the stoma? The stoma will move/change shape when it is active. I know mine pulls in towards me, it doesn't hurt, just feels/looks funny. Does it get better if the output is thicker?

I also had a slight "burning" sensation when having stoma output right after surgery.  I am seven weeks post op and they have gone away.  The sensation felt like it was right on my stoma but since there are no nerves in the intestines I am sure it was the stomach muscles below.  Since the muscle was cut to allow for the intestines to pass through they are still healing and when there is output it would put pressure on those sore muscles.  The "burning" sensation has gone away for me but I can still sometimes feel when I am outputting.  I would say as long as you can't see any leaks or any skin irritation that this is more then likely normal and will eventually go away.

Yes she feels a burning pain near the stoma. She can't tell if it is a burn feeling or just a pain. It is mostly when she is outputting. The stoma looks like it is breathing. She has only noticed this today. She is slowly eating more so her output is a slight bit thicker now. There doesn't seem to be any leaks or irritation. At least I can tell her that others have felt this way.

i have felt that too, andi can still sometimes feel it coming out, more so when i have gas. It feels tickly almost to me, but at first it was kind of painful, it really scared me hte first time i felt it!

I know that exact feeling--a weird, kind of painful/uncomfortable feeling when the stoma is very new.  It takes the stiches around the stoma a long time to dissolve (one of mine took almost 2 months!  Just dissolved a few weeks ago!), and as they are healing you are very aware of any movement/output of the stoma.

The best thing I can tell you daughter is that the feeling will definitely lessen, and not feel uncomfortable/painful in about 1-2 months.  At first, I kind of liked the fact that I felt stuff coming out--I was so paranoid about leaks, but I could tell anytime something was going into the bag so I would just empty it then.

Anyway, I wish your daughter good luck with her future surgeries--I am sure the first one is the hardest because you don't know what to expect.. :)

Sure it feels weird! she has her intestine attached to her abdominal wall,, she can feel everything moving.
It takes awhile to get used to that! One of the pleasures of wearing a bag! cool
