Kidney stones

Crohn's patients are more likely to develop kidney stones than some other folks. I never had any stones all the while I was very sick, about a five year run. After I had a total colectomy in '97, I began getting kidney stones. Had at least an episode per year since then, and I have been very healthy.

Anyone else get stones since they've had their Crohn's...maybe they should be called Crohn's Stones. :)

As an added bonus to having my rectum removed this past July, I had a kidney stone attack on the third night after the surgery while in hospital, and passed four large stones the next day. What a night !

EWWWWW - OWWWWW!!! I have never had kidney stones and I don't envy you any either! My BIL just had one and he's not a sissy baby, but he was in some real pain. I've heard all the horror stories about them, but I will have to admit that you have had your share and someone else's too.

Chin up, right? At least we don't have daily, chronic pain. Amazing how we write off "occasional" pain in return for feeling well the rest of the time!

Haha Peggy113, maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones who got the stones along with the Crohn's !

I've been told by my GI, urologists, and my surgeon that Crohn's patients can be predisposed to the darn things.

Anyway, after passing the four in July, there were none visible afterward. Time to start building a new crop.

Funny though, after my TC in '97, I had my first kidney stone attack a week after getting out of the hospital. Geez, what will the next surgery bring ?  :)

And you are RIGHT, the tradeoff for being well most of the time is worth it.

I hope that you don't have to suffer from anymore of those stones! I have heard gall bladder issues are common for ileostomy folk... have you heard that one?

oh man, Crohn's AND Stones ~ that does sound really painful!! shakehead

I'm not surprised, though, because kidney stones can be a result of dehydration. I used to get dehydrated with Crohn's and those of us without colons are prone to getting dehydrated, too, since the colon's main function is to extract fluid. This is a good reminder for all of us to drink plenty of water every day, especially if you're a coffee drinker, like me. wink

Hey Peggy113, I hadn't heard about gallbladder...not another affliction !! I think we bear enough as it is.. :)

No doubt there will be more stones in the future. I've passed about 12 since '97, and they are weird things...some kinda just pop out after feeling a mild flu type symproms, and others put me on the floor curled up in a ball.

flchurchlady, dehydration might well be the cause of my early ones, me not being educated enough to drink more than prior to the surgery. Or I was warned and no doubt didn't listen... :)

I'm a tea drinker, and have learned to drink extra fluid even when I'm NOT thirsty, LOL
