upcoming colostomy

im having colostomy surgery next week, im quadraplegic and doing this to make life easier. i want to know all abouut surgery day, how long in hospital, is an ng tube used. im hoping that going in healthy and feeling well, the surgery wont be a difficult experience. please share some stories with me........

lets see, i had my surgery on a tuesday. And on monday i had to take that awful awful medicine and go to the batrhoom a thousand times, lol. Then Tuesday morning i went to the hopstial went in a room, got my iv started and all that happy stuff, then went into another room, where they didn't like the first iv so they placed a new one, and then i got some lovely medicine that was very very nice, and this part gets a little fuzzy, i went to a room, on the way i gave my husband my glasses. i got in the operating room, and asked if it was gonna be like on seinfeld with the junior mint episode. Then i dont' knwo what happened for liek the next four hours or so.
I woke up in a room, and i was in pain, and i remember asking for someone to help me, so they gave me some more meds andthen that helped, and at some point i went to a regular room.
I had a cathether, and this thingin my side that blood drained in to. The next day i got a pic line. But i didn't have an NG tube, i dont' think most people do, ithink that only happens if your stoma doesn't start working. I have an ileo though, and it might be dif for a colostomy. I was there for 6 days, andwhile i was there the nurses changed my bag and stuff for me, they have to keep track of the output and all. then the stoma nurse came in and we changed my bag together.
I came home with pain meds, butonly took them for about three days after i got home.

I dated a paraplegic in college, so I understand why you want to have this surgery. I think it will make your life so much easier. :-)

I have an ileostomy due to Crohn's, and it took it 10 days to start working, so I was in the hospital longer than most - 3 weeks. I was throwing up a lot, so they placed an NG tube, but again, my small intestine was just being lazy. Once it started working, I've had very few problems in the last 3 years.

Good luck with your surgery, and please keep us posted on how you're doing.

i dont know exactly how much of you is paralyzed so this may not apply, but a family friend has a son who has spinabiphida and he has an ostomy, he has no feeling below his waist. and he had a problem because not having any feeling in that area, he couldn't feel when his bag was full. Like i can feel it heavier or fuller on me, but he couldn't do that, so his bag was getting full andhe didn't notice. So you may have to keep that in mind.

thanks 4 responses......another question i have, i want the disposable bag and change it am and pm, is that realistic, or will it need more changes....

for a colosomty twice a day would be fine, although i dont' know that you can time it, some people with colostomies can do irragiation and only do it like every other day
if you have an ileoostomy, then you will have to do it 4-6 times a day
