Help I can't find anything on this anywhere!  I've jumped over here from the Crohns forum as I have just been given a temporary ileostomy.  Is it normal to do a poo too? sorry to be so blunt but that has just happened to me yet I have the bag! I can't understand it maybe there was some left in the large bowel building up since the operation? Hopefully you will tell me this is a normal one off as the only joy I get out of the bag is the thought I won't need to run for the loo anymore.

Hi Miss UK,

When you say "poo too" I take it you are seeing actual formed or loose stool coming from the rectum? If so thats not normal but I dought you would have been operated on with out being empty if it was a planned surgery. When you wipe your bum is it clear or poo?

What you may be feeling is the function of discarding some natural clear fluid from the lining of the large intestines its like K-Y jell and that can feel like a BM and that is normal.

yes this is completely normal if you have a temp ostomy along with a rectum. I don't know why surgeons never tell their patients this! The reason this happens is because the temp ostomy is like a hose cut in half but not all the way through. So as digested food travels down the small intestine it has both the opportunity to exit the stoma or exit down the normal path. Does this make sense?

I saw my "stoma therapist" last week and she told me that it is perfectly normal to have a bit of "poop" pass once in awhile.  Do you have a loop ileostomy??  Also, when you have to pass mucous (the large intestine still produces it and it has to be expelled), sometimes it can feel like you have to have a bowel movement.  This is normal.  I was having a problem passing the mucous so she told me to use children's suppositories for this.  I also had abit of blood in the mucous and she told me that this was normal also.  Hope this helps!

Thank you very much for your quick replies.  Phew what a relief it sounds to me like it is normal then but not that common or often.  It feels like I'm going to pass something major but it's only a small amount but it is proper poo blush and yes it's a loop ileosotomy I have.

It's very common with a temp ostomy! Just about every jpoucher who had a 2-step surgery (temp ostomy) has had this experience, including me! Don't worry and also don't worry if you see blood or mucus. It's ALL normal.

Miss UK, I had the same reaction when I received my temporary loop ileostomy. I've had it since July 2007. It takes longer for formed stools to come through my rectum, but I get them about once a month.

Ahw thanks for your replies they are so appreciated it's the difference between panicking and knowing alls ok.  As I've only just had surgery I found it hard to get anything out as I'm in a lot of pain I almost wrote a post for help on what to do smilewinkgrin   but got there in the end.  I'm hoping like Ohio43 this will only happen once a month because the only good thing about the bag is the thrill of not having to sit on the loo all day!
