I have a illeostomy currently and have had a Colostomy in the past will I ever be normal

I recently had an illeostomy done because I substained an injury in 1989 to my rectum that caused me to have a colostomy, for 18 years I have quietly dealt with feces coming out my vagina.  This incident was when I was only 9yrs old, resulting from either the reversal of the colostomy being done wrong, or the injury not being properly assessed and/or repaired.  Anyway i finally got matched with a wonderful doctor who thought it was best to have an illeostomy done to reroute, while he tried to repair the fistula.  I am just wondering will I ever have normal bowel habits, and what if any conditions can arise from having these surgeries done.  Are you more likely to develop cancer or other ailments?  I am asking because I  am only 28 and I hopefully have a long way to go.

i'm not sure i can help you with those questions, but having an ileo isn't bad. I would think you would have less risk of cancer, i dont think having surgeries increasing risk of cancer.

Hi,

You are at no greater risk for cancer because of these surgeries. Not knowing the extent of everything I don't know if you will every have "normal" bowel movements again. Is this a permanent ileostomy the surgeon did? I wish I could help more, but I at least wanted to welcome you to the site and I am sure you will get some good help/information.

Hey Amy thanks for the support and I commend you for taking care of your daughter and I send out all blessings to you both, it must be refreshing to have someone to assist in that type of situation, even if its just to be there to have someone to talk to.  Thats the part that really hard for me because I have two kids 8 and 4, and I stay at home with them, too embarrassed to go anywhere or talk to anyone about my situation, but thanks again and good luck to you and your daughter, may God be with you and bless you!
