I've had my ostomy since Nov.19,08 and honestly..I wouldn't mind keeping it. I'm so used to it now. I don't have to run to the bathroom anymore..99% of time I can eat anything I want without pain. There's still a few things that give me heartburn and make my belly hurt but I'm sure that's normal. I go the 18th of this month to see my surgeon for my fourth anal dialation. Hopefully then she gives me a better idea of when I can have my re-connection surgery..I mean, I want to be able to use to bathroom like a normal person, but I don't mind it a bit to have my bag. I know what the problem is..I'm so scared! Im scared because I'm used to not having to run to the potty and not having pain and my surgeon said im going to "poop my brains out" hahah So for all of you who had an ostomy and had the re-connection surgery, did you poop your brains out? Did you have pain? Did you have to run to the bathroom and when you went somewhere..were you always making sure you knew where the closest bathroom was like you had to do before your got the surgeries? Please calm my fears lol smhair

I'm almost 8 weeks out since my reconnect and I don't run to the bathroom at all. I did for the first couple of weeks but then it slowed way down. Now I just go to the bathroom like a normal person. I might go two or three times a day but I have complete control and there is no more urgency than there was before I had any of these problems. I don't even think of scoping out the bathrooms until I realize I have to go. I know everyone is different and I'm sure you'll hear from others, but this has been my experience. I really hope that helps. Oh and I only had the bag for two months. I don't think that makes a difference but I thought you might be wondering.

Bella-if you will take some gasx everyday, like in the morning and then in the afternoon, before you get gas and whatever it will help alot.

I hope suebear comes along soon...she is a great advocate for the possitives of a j-pouch! Sadly, that was never an option for me:( Have you checked out jpouch.org?

I had my takedown surgery in April of last year and in the beginning you will be going more while your pouch adapts. But honestly 2-3 times a day is not the norm, more like 6-10 sounds realistic. It's not at all like UC where you have to run to make it, you feel gas and can hold it, sometimes for an hour or more. In the first few months you are figuring out which foods you can tolerate, butt burn is usually attributed to spicier/acidic foods that you might need to hold off for awhile. They say that it takes a full year for the adjustment period, and I would say that I really don't think about bathrooms every where I go.

A good idea would be to go to jpouch.org and you can get questions answered there. Just remember that a majority of people on that site are there due to issues that they are having and it doesn't mean that you will experience the same. I wanted to know all the good and bad, My surgeon didn't really tell me what to expect and both healingwell and jpouch have been a life saver for me.

I had to have a dialation at the same time as my takedown and I haven't had any stricture issues since, so don't worry about that.
