Posted awhile back because my husband has Lynch Syndrome and three doctors agreed he needed to have his colon removed. Well after an eight day stay we returned home from Rochester, New York after my husband had his colon removed. He had this done laporscopic and did not have to have any kind of prep before surgery, other then not eating after midnight the night before. Surgery went well but took 3 hours longer then they thought because of him being overweight. His small intestine was brought down and attached to his rectumn. Pain after surgery was not unbarable for him, controlled with the pain meds. Passed only old blood the day after surgery and did not have any bowel sounds or passing of gas, stomach was very distended. He ended up having an ng tube and was on iv fluids only and was running a fever. Many exrays and blood test showed no infection or blockage. They kept up with the ng tube and iv fluids until they started getting bowel sounds and he was passing gas. He slowly started clear liquids and then on to soilds. We are very surprised the way his bowels have been. 2 days after surgery he started having watery stool that would keep coming even when he thought he was finished and would go to stand up and the stool would just keep coming out in the form of liquid, over two days this stopped and he went 12 times in a day but had some control. After solid foods were added this slowed up and he is going 5 to 6 times a day now, has control and can even hold off for awhile if he needs to. He has had some small piles of stool in the toilet after he has eaten but not solid and breaks apart when you flush, we did not think he would ever have stool like this let alone 8 days after surgery. We are hoping things continue to get better and better.
I have been wondering if he will have a problem not being able to absorb vitamins that are needed to keep him healthy.
Thanks for listening and would love some input.
