recurring fungal rash

After having my ileostomy now for almost 10 yrs I recently have been getting a fungal rash under the wafer for the first time and the wafer starts to unstick anytime I get sweaty. It clears up overnight when I change the wafer, use a barrier wipe on the skin and apply a prescription fungal powder. However as soon as I do anything that makes me sweat it comes back!! I'm so frustrated! I'm currently using Hollister New Image 2-piece, maybe if I change to Convatec? Any help on this would be awesome!

I had similar problems. My ET used to change the paste and stoma bags. I had tried almost all brands. Please ask your doc they may put you on to small dose of Pred for a week or so. This may help in treating the infection. I had it for 3 days and the Pred did help.

Try dabbing a little Milk of Magnesia on your skin before you put on your next appliance. This may help.

I think there was a post on here recently talking about taking a RX pill (only 1 pill) called Diflucan for yeast infections. Ask your MD about it or ostomy nurse. Others use the topical creams and have success too. Also, an eakin seal provides a little better adhesion to the skin if you have tried that under the wafer.

chin up--I JUST put the hollister new image 2 piece with lock n roll on yesterday--not even 36 hours ago-- but the darn thing had a pin hole in it. Luckily I had a tank top under my shirt and only the tank top is stained. So I put the clip bag they sent me on so I can try their 2 piece for another day or two. How long is the flange to last? I wish they'd sent another of the lock n roll. I do like the one piece lock n roll.

The stoma powder really helped my irritated skin. I'm also trying to wear appliances without tape. Hope your fungal rash disappears and stays away!

Thanks sammies, I have always had pretty good luck with the 2-pc. I prefer the clip since it's easier to empty and I'm too paranoid I will have a pile of poo from the lock n roll opening. At least with the clip it feels more secure. Hollister or the company you order from should replace the defective one though. Your wafer should last 3-4 days according to Hollister. The stoma powder does really help!

I'm hoping that darn rash stays cleared up but with the heat in Cali I may be in for a dreadful summer. The idea of Diflucan is a good one and trying the eakin seal since I have tried all sorts of topical creams from the Derm Dr.

is it under the wafer or the tape? I've always cut away the tape part if I was having skin issues under that part. If it's yeast, the Diflucan will be the fastest fix. Sorry you're having such a hard time:(

I was afraid of the velcro closures, too...but then I jumped in with a gusto...and never looked back (and never had anything "let go")
