The Radcliffe in Oxford reckon about
25% of theirs are done in one step. The final decision is normally made when the patient is on the table and if there is any doubt they are given a diverting stoma.
I know a number of people who have had their surgery done this way, recovery from the surgery tended to be longer but then they did not have a second surgery to recover from. Longer term they are all fine.
