Question about the 1 step J-pouch surgery

Hi to all,
This might be the wrong place to post this ( I am also posting this on the UC forum) but I am not quite sure where to go for help.
I had a surgical consult today and the surgeon recommended the 1 step j-pouch where they remove the colon and create the pouch and wire everything through all at once. I am a little leery of this method but the surgeon said he has had great success with this procedure. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of surgery and what your thoughts and feelings on it were, also if there were any complications from it and if you had to do it over again this way, would you?

I suppose your surgeon knows best but I had mine in two steps. My body was so malnourished and just wasn't up to par it is good to let it heal and give it a resting period. I still really wasn't healthy enough for the reversal because my body couldn't fight off infection. I suppose, as we always hear everyone is different! I have no medical background. I'm sure you would be able to find some journal articles online. Check out "Gut" and any GI journal. You can search goodle academics or try your local library!

In the UK there is a slight preference on performing the op in 2 stages, however in carefully selected patients one step is fairly common. The Radcliffe in Oxford reckon about 25% of theirs are done in one step. The final decision is normally made when the patient is on the table and if there is any doubt they are given a diverting stoma.

I know a number of people who have had their surgery done this way, recovery from the surgery tended to be longer but then they did not have a second surgery to recover from. Longer term they are all fine.
