So glad to hear that things went well. My advice is even though you start to feel better take it SLOW. When they let you start to drink just take sips and when you can eat, eat very little bits (grazing all day) CHEW CHEW CHEW and get up and move. At the beginning the walking may mean just get out of bed and walk to the chair, But as AS SOON AS POSSIBLE get really walking. The only complication that Dillon ran into was that he was not walking enough and ate a little to much at the beginning and his bowels decided slow right down. He was not obstructed but nothing would go through for a couple of days just because the bowels have a mind of their own and decided that they were not really ready to work that hard. The docs even have a name for this.."The 5 day slow down"...very original and scientific!

Again, I am so happy that it is over and went well. Don't you already feel better knowing that that crappy organ is gone! I have not seen such a look of peace on Dillon's face in about 2 years.

It's great to hear from you so soon after surgery, and I'm thrilled you're doing so well! Isn't it amazing to be rid of that diseased colon? You are now UC-free!! woo hoo!

I agree with everyone's advice to walk as much as possible. That will get things moving. The sooner things move, the sooner you can eat and go home. But, go easy on eating anything until you definitely get output. It will be watery at first, but that's normal. It will slow down and thicken over time.

Some tips... mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide in the pouch works great as a deodorizer. Also, ask the nurse for some adhesive remover wipes to use when removing the wafer. The wafer and pouch they give you after surgery are horrible and nothing like the ones you'll be using on a regular basis. The ostomy nurse is there to help you, and so are we.
