The pain in the hospital was manageable. I had good drugs the first few days. It wasn't fun, but it's not horrible. Just getting rid of a colon that doesn't work will make you feel better.
I wouldn't worry too much about
loose stools. There are many things you can take for that, and if you're like me, that's not an issue at all. I did have loose stools and diarrhea for the first few weeks, but all of a sudden one day it just stopped. Now I still have some loose stools, but often still have problems going...but not nearly as bad as before and I can usually get things moving with enemas or prune juice, which never worked before. Things aren't perfect at all for me, but I have pelvic floor issues, and I'm hoping to get them worked out.
If you truly don't go to the bathroom for weeks at a time and your doctor recommends surgery, I would definitely have surgery. I know it seems scary, but once the surgery is over with, you'll be very happy, I'm sure.
