High Cholesterol Post Surgery - Anyone experience this?

Hello,

I had a permanent illeostomy in January this year.  Post surgery I have survived a DVTs and several PE (two just barely).  My latest concern is high cholesterol.  Since September, my triglycerides have been going through the roof.  My PCP is unsure right now what the cause is and is double checking everything and will consult with my GI Doc.  He was wondering out loud if it might have anything to do with patients that have had this surgery, but feels that is a reach.  I thought I would ask if anyone in this forum has run into anything similar with a similar history of mine (Crohns for 18 years with the illeostomy, age 47). 

My triglyceride leve was just over 600 with Mayo in Sept and today was 1536.  They are taking another reading to see if it was a lab error, but we don't think so.  Curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this or something remotely similar and what the root cause was if you did.  Would be glad to hear from you if you did.  Considerations we are looking at is lab errors, medicine combos, surgical, and diet among others.

By the way - posting here because there is no heart history in my family and I have been through all the heart/stress tests.  Mayo said my heart is fine and no issues what-so-ever.

Most jpouchers I know, including me,  have experienced the opposite, a drop in cholesterol post colectomy.

Hi Spindy,
Welcome to HW ostomies. You have the right place because there is a wealth of information here and I'm not there yet but can comment on me. I was taking Lipitor 80mg daily before my surgery and that was done in an emergency at the end of June. I like suebear have been within normal limits and I haven't had any Lipitor since surgery

Just checking to see if your docs have come up with anything. i have had an ileo since sept 2007 i have not been feeling well found out i have high blood pressure and when they did the blood work very high fatty blood not sure why starting lipidil

Hi My cholesterol is 205 post ilesotomy. Used to be 180. Not that bad, but a change. I think I read that ileos affect the gall bladder and potentially the kidneys of we don't drink enough water. Slightly off topic here. BUt I think there are some systemic effects of having an ileo. Let us know what you find out. Rosemary

My cholesterol is actually the only 'normal' level in my immediate family ie mum, dad, 2 brothers (well... one refuses to get his checked). I probably eat the most junk food too lol

Like Suebear, I've heard that for most ostomates (ileostomates at least), cholesterol isn't much of a problem anymore.
