Am I really not allowed to eat for that long?

Hi, I'm a bit confused had a pre assessment this morning for my ileostomy reversal scheduled for 27th Jan and have been told by the nurse that i must stop eating solid food as from 11am on 25th jan! shocked: and just be on clear fluids till midnight the night before op is this right? It seems a long time, when whatever i eat is in the pouch within 2 hours also when i had the original op i had to stop eating at 2am then had the op at 3pm. If you have had a reversal what pep did you have to do if any thanks for any input Bev x wink

seems a little long to me, i would think probably no solids the day before or maybe no solids after say 9pm on the 25th.
Call again becaue alot of time they just give generic instructions

I think she's giving you info for those with colons. I had to stop eating at 6pm the night before my reversal.

I had a two day bowel prep for my temp ostomy takedown:

Day one: liquids only.
Day two: liquids only, Magnesium Citrate (had a schedule to follow, two doses I believe, this was 10 years ago). Nothing by mouth (NPO in medical jargon) after midnight.

Day three: surgery.

This was brutal, I got down to 103 lbs. Haven't been that skinny since high school!

3 days? Oh my.....however did you get thru it?

I'm the type that needs a light breakfast each morning. Once I begin a liquid diet, I am already headachy and feeling lousy. I don't know how I managed a 2 day liquid diet. Somehow I did.

I did go about 14 days w/o solids though, 1 day prep for my first surgery, then no solids in the hospital until my 6th day. One more day of hospital food and I was released, told to eat anything I wanted. I tried that but ended up being so sick. My surgeon said later my GI tract was sluggish and I had to go back on a liquid diet. For over 3 days. But each day I had food to look forward to and no more surgeries (unless you count my takedown, 8 weeks later). When it was all over, I counted up almost 14 days of very few solids. I went from a size 12 to a size 4. My old clothes were just hanging on me. Not the best way to lose weight. Once I got thru that rough patch and my stoma starting working correctly, my GI tract really woke up. I was starving and enjoying food like you wouldn't believe. LOL

Somehow though we all get thru these long preps don't we?

Thanx everyone, for your replies I finally got a call back from the hospital and only have to fast for 6 hours whew! so at least thats sorted for when i finally go in for the reversal! Bev x
