I haven't been updating. I was in the hospital for 15 days, as I had kidney failure for the third time. This time I was in the hospital from Fri-Sun and then my levels were normal. By Monday morning, I was already in trouble again, even though I had been on fluids and TPN overnight. That's just how extreme my output from the ostomy was. My surgeon said he presented my case and conferences and other doctors didn't even believe the volume I was putting out. My surgeon was out of town and his partner was going to do the takedown, but my surgeon came home early to do it. I was in a week waiting for it and then a week after the surgery. He was draining the pouch with a catheter tube every 4 hours the first couple of days as he wanted to be sure the fistula wouldn't come back if the pouch filled up too much or I had to strain at all. I had no urge to go at all the first few days. I am going normally now--just ALL the time--like every hour day and night. I hope my dehydration issues get better with the ostomy gone now.
My takedown surgery took about 4.5 hours. it's supposed to be a quick surgery but they're always longer and more complicated for me. The pain is worse this time just because I've been opened up 5 times recently and there is just so much scar tissue. The skin around where the ostomy was is still very irritated and painful, though my doctor did cut some of the really damaged skin out. My incision was left open in 3 spots so I have to pack the wounds every day. I'm on the TPN for at least a couple of weeks, because even though I've been on it for 6-7 weeks, my nutrition levels are still "marginal"
I can't wait to heal and start living a normal life again and enjoying my son (he just turned 1 yesterday!)
