Hello everyone - I do not have an ostomy - but my Dad does. He had his surgery (ileostomy) performed in 1952 (when it was still a bit crude) and in those days they gave him a life expectancy of around 15 years. (I was just a few months old at the time). My Dad will be 90 this year, he has 2 grandchildren who love him to bits, and has been the most uncomplaining person you could ever wish to meet.
Sadly we lost my Mum 5 years ago - a real mental blow to me as I always was in the mindset that my Dad would go first. But my Dad still looks after himself, although of course he is lonely without my Mum. We are planning a big celebration for his 90th, and I wondered if any of you could help me out in finding out if he may be one of the longest surviving ileostomy patients.
Of course I think he's wonderful - he's my Dad! But I would dearly love to know how many people undergoing stoma surgery in the 50's are still around and maintaining a good quality of life.
Thankyou for reading - I have every admiration for all of you.
