going so much my bag wont hold

I have had my colostomy for one year now and all of a sudden the foods on my safe list are going off. After I eat something within minutes my bag will be so full that the poop will seep out and I will soon be covered in it. This has happened to me four times. One time I was at work! I don't know what is going on, I am getting frustrated. I thought on of the reasons for having an ostomy was so that you could go in public and not have to worry so much about going. But that is all quickly changing for me. Has this happened to anyone else? I am calling my GI tomorrow but it is a 6month wait list to see her. I just need to know if this has happened to anyone else, and if they are still able to live their lives, or are they back to being hermits not leaving their homes? HELP!

No I havent had that problem since having my ileostomy done in March of 09 same time as you I see. Do you have a colostomy or ileostomy? I am no authority on this as I am still learning myself but my doc is keeping an eye on the possibility that my crohns may be coming back as I have had my bag fill up lots but not to the point of overflowing like yours is, my doc has given me some gastro stop tablets to slow down my output and thicken it up as the ileostomy is more a watery output than the colostomy I believe. I am so sorry you are going through this, I remember only too well how bad it was before my surgery not being able to leave the house for fear of losing control of my bowel all the time. I would be calling your stoma nurse surely you can't wait 6 months to see someone about this problem. Sorry Im not much help to you but Im sure someone will be along soon to offer you better advice. I just posted on your Crohn's thread...but here are some more thoughts:

Does Imodium help at all?

Do you use a convex wafer? Eakin Seal?

How long has this been happening? If you are having that much output in a short amount of time, are you dehydrated?

How long do you have to wait for lab work? Get checked for C-Diff.

Why won't they take you sooner since you are having problems? Will your surgeon see you?

Don't get discouraged with your ostomy...once your docs figure out what is going on you'll be back to no problems!!!
