Ok, the ostomy nurse came to my room and helped me change my pouch. She had to remove this plastic rod from my stoma and it was stitched in and the stitches had to be snipped and removed. OUCH, this hurt so bad, not my stoma, but the skin around the stoma. Then, with the pouch off, the stoma started shooting crap everywhere. YUCK I got all hot and felt faint when I looked down at the stoma because it was moving all around and appeared to be breathing. OMG I did not expect that. I lived through the pouch change and did most of it by myself, but still feel very uncomfortable.

My stoma is also producing tons of brown liquid....when will this slow down? I have to drink constantly to try and keep up with the output. I have eaten crackers, bread, applesauce to try and thicken it up at doctors orders. It is still shooting out like crazy. My doctor may have me try immodium, but I am a little worried about taking it so soon after surgery.

I am sorry, but I do have to laugh .... this is all completely normal in the beginning. I was actually placed on lomitil I think it is called and immodium within the first 2 weeks of my surgery because I was exacctly like you and many on this board with producing mass amounts of output. This is exactly how I winded up back in the hosptial because I was so dehydrated and didn't follow orders. My stoma nurse at the hospital was a fox, and here I am dumping on her. You will get used to it, trust me. It may sound very burdensome, but you will get used to it. The first time I tried doing it myself it took an hour. I am chaning my pouch at less than 10 minutes. Give yourself a chance and give everything time. It will all work out. Yeah, the movement of the stoma is called peristalsis ... muscle contractions to move your waste. You will slow down, btw. I am almost producing solid stool from mine. It is weird. It will get better.

How long after surgery did you try the lomitil? How long did it take for you to return to the hospital with dehydration? I am very worried I will suffer the same fate. I am trying to eat a cracker, pretzel, or a piece of bread to try and slow this stuff down. I have been home for 4 hours and already have output of 750cc???? If it continues, I will call my doctor tomorrow and get some advice. Thanks for responding so quick....this room is awesome.....Tracy

I had 6-7 liters of output a day. It never slowed for me, but I have other issues.
I've spent up to 5 hours with nurses having output spray all over....fun times. I do not miss my ostomy

ok it will go crazy like for a week or two, its just getting used to taking up some extra slack! once you have been eating more steadily and more food, it will thicken. You can try immodium whenever, as long as you keep having output this early it shouldnt matter. I take it now whenever i dont want output for a while.
But anyway, its totally normal to be disgusted and freaked out by it at first, but you will get used to it!

LOL The same thing happened to me when I changed my appliance for the first time in the hospital. I had to lay down because I almost fainted and then Zoe shot out totally green poo EVERYWHERE!! It was not my best moment :)

answers4me: I was taking the lomitil while in the hospital (about 1 week after surgery) because output was way too much. I will tell you now, that I am completely off both and it may sound gross, but even with a temp ileo my doddie is nearly formed. It is the weirdest thing in the world. It also depends on what foods you eat as well.

Hi Tracy,

For dumping (which you will do for a few weeks) I was told not to drink anything within a half hour of eating. So alternate your eating with drinking. Two tsps of baby food banana may help or some applesauce to thicken. If immodium, start with 1/4 of a chewable then can add some. Rihgt now a half will stop my gut in its tracks, but yours is so new you may need the whole, but start with partial doses would be my thought anyway. It has been so long I'd forgotten about the massive output at first. But as someone above said last night mine was almost formed. So you will get there. Welcome to my world. You can see why I'm suing those 2 original surgeons who did the what was later found out to be the unneeded surgery on my rectum, colon and pelvic floor which lead me to need the ileostomy to save my life, because no matter how you slice it this is challenging, but it can be managed. I also passed out twice when my stoma was new and I saw it move, but movement is good. But scary at first. Hang in, you got plenty of company. If you start to feel severely dizzy, lethargic, total loss of concentration, and muscle cramps, get to the hosp for an IV, all symptoms of dehydration. Your nearest hospital should easily be able to handle this. Best wishes. At least you're not in ileus that is FOR SURE! :-)

Tracy, you'll be OK with stoma, trust me. My hands were shaking so bad the first time I changed everything I didn't think I could do it. Plus I was trying to hurry before anything "discharged". The ostomy/wound nurses are in a class by themselves I have to say. My nurse Jan is the most low-key; laid-back person and that's part of what makes her excellent at her job. I make a 150 miles round trip just to see her - that's how much I value her input and care.
