wrinkles in wafer.

hey guys, i had my first of three steps for a j-pouch last wednesday, and am already home and feeling good ( just sore ab muscles ).

i have had to change my waffer of my two piece system by myself twice now ( day i left hospital and this morning ) and i cant seem to get it to be stuck down completely. around the entire edge of the wafer is little wrinkles that dont stick down ( not sure im explainng it properly ) is this a problem. should i put adhesive paste around the edge of the wafer before i apply it to my belly.

do you have a stoma nurse that can come and visit you to help with this? They should be able to help you figure out the best method and proper ostomy supplies. What do you use for your system right now? I use two piece systems as well, but the wafer I have molds perfectly to my fat ;)

No, you don't have to put paste around the wafer tape...some people lay down on their bed or the floor to get a smooth seal!

What brand of appliance are you using? The wrinkles really shouldn't cause too much of a problem but you could put pieces of the pink waterproof tape over those edges just to be sure :-)

In the US we have a GREAT product called Sure Seal Ring. If you can get some, they're great, especially for the situation you describe! They are a waterproof/breathable barrier over the wafer tape that keeps everything dry and secure and you can just towel off and go!

Glad you are already home recovering...take it easy for a little while...you did just have surgery yeah

Do you have wrinkles in the wafer or the tape around the outer edge? Wrinkles in the wafer is a problem and needs to be fixed. Wrinkles in the tape is no problem. If you have a leak that reaches the tape, the tape will not stop it. I have been wearing convatec one piece pouch 400598 for 2 1/2 years, It has a tape around the edge that is waterproof. Shower every day with no problem, even with wrinkles in the tape.

yeah wrinkles in the tape, as long as they arent causing the tape to pull off your skin, it wont matter, although i dont like them, so if i dont have a sure seal for some reason (which btw totally rock!) i tape down the edges

thanks alot guys, from what your saying im pretty sure its just in the tape part of the base, not the actual wafer part around the stoma. i do have an ST nurse i can call, but ill wait and see how i go with the change tomorrow morning first.

there hasnt been any signs of leaking or anything, just being pretty young ( turn 20 in a month and a half ) im really worried about leaks and stuff happening, would just be so embarassing i dont know how i would cope with it. is it inevitable that this will happen, or do you think i could make it till my last surgery prob 7 months without having a leak ?

as for supplies, im using a two-piece system by dansac. not sure if you guys would have that brand in the US. those sure seal things sound great ill have to ask my STN when i call her next.

i cant say if you will have a leak or not, but most of the time, leaks are user error, so once you get your system down, its alot less likely it will happen!
I had a few at first, before i had the hang of it, then even recently my stupid self mismatched the wafer and the bag! It stayed just long enough for me to lay down to sleep, lol.
Just be careful of how you put it on, and never every change right before you go somewhere, lol. And dont push your wear time.

I've heard that before....never change the day you are going somewhere. I have never had a failure the day I changed or ever during the day. My failures are always between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning....and usually when I eat something I shouldn't have or too late in the evening. My stoma and intestine will squeeze and cramp up painfully. My stoma pulls way inside my abdomen and turns sideways forcing the poop under the wafer. Even an Eakin seal can't stop it. After the thread about popcorn, I tried some. Had a blowout this morning about 5:00. No more popcorn.....guess I will have to be satisfied with blackberry brandy with blackberry juice and rum.

I wonder if you are rolling over on your bag or if you turn around some way in your sleep that puts alot of strain on it.

I dont think the popcorn would cause a leak, if anything it slows you down. probably just a coincidence

I have a question??? When I am ready to replace my wafer it hurts coming off, is that normal? It sticks too much to my skin, like it should I guess. Does it hurt for anyone else?

Use the adhesive removers. I use the Allkare Adhesive Removers by Convatec. Wipe a small area, push down on your skin and pull the wafer up, repeat until the wafer is completely off. Start from the top and wipe, side from side so you keep the bottom part on until the end, so if you leak it's still there.

if its still stuck that good that just means it could have stayed on longer, lol.
