Hodaya and Tracy,
Just a "technical question": For breakfast I had juice, coffee, hot rice cereal, and milk, so naturally output was liquidy. Emptied twice (bag 1/3 full each time) and went on with the day.
Then for lunch I had a glass of water, a few crackers, table spoon of cottage cheese, and a cinnamon bun with milk. I had liquid output of the liquid that was I guess still in me from breakfast (about 1/3 bag). Then the output virtually stopped. When it started up again it was VERY THICK and I could feel the stoma working hard. So I drank grape juice, hot bullion, and then it softened up and started coming out.
My question to you is IS THAT NORMAL???? Auuuugh! I feel OK. I just after 3 years don't have a clue what normal is with an ileostomy. Hodaya, you are more like me in that you have been living out of only your small intestine for quite awhile even though your stoma is new. I have been living out of my small intestine with the stoma for 3 years.
Tracy, you are still "adapting" to living out of your small intestine only for a very short time, so I think our output variations will be quite different.
But what can either of you tell me? Is it dangerous to get output too thick or does it even matter?
Grape juice, chocolate, Liquor, orange juice, caffeine, all are thinners. Cheese, crackers, buns, bready stuff are all thickeners. Are we supposed to combine thinners and thickeners?
I want to ask my new surgeon this but I think he would look at me quizzically. (He's a great guy, but I think he may just not know the answer.) My original ostomy surgeon said as long as you feel OK and are not nauseaus, all is well. Likely good advice, but I still want to know what normal is.
Thanks, Rosemary
