Will I be allowed in the OR if you wife has a C Section??

So, last year my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and I had my JPouch then so it wasn't a big deal with me being in the OR ... other than the frequent bathroom visits (darn you pouchitis!!!) :)

Now that I have my ileostomy, and have my life back!! Woohoooooooo!! *double fist pump* We're planning to have another baby cuz this one is about to turn 1 this week!! Big question is, will I be allowed to be in the OR with my wife? I know that there are some restrictions for us ostomates, for example I heard that you cannot be a chef in a kitchen if you have an ostomy. Any truth to this or is it just a rumor?

I don't know for sure but I highly doubt this is true. I can't see any reason why you couldn't be a chef either, there is nothing unhigenic about us at all. Chefs still go to the bathroom, so do doctors and nurses so if anyone tells you that you can't be with your wife in the delivery room I would sue their ass. All the best

I thought so too!!! i just wanted to make sure before I posed the question to her OB.
The whole chef thing threw me off as well. Might be a bunch of crock! :)

i dont see why you couldnt be a chef, i mean the employer wouldnt even know unless you told them.
as for the OR thing i dont see why that would matter either, just be sure you empty before you go in, so you dont have to leave

Agreed. I do not see why it should be a problem in either of those scenarios.

Most definitely untrue! There is no reason whatsoever as to why you can't be a chef (in fact I know of at least two chefs with ostomies).

And your ostomy shouldn't stop you from being in the OR with your wife. We're just as hygenic (if not more so since all our poop is contained in our bags) as 'bowel intact' people and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm betting there's more than one surgeon (and I've heard of several OR nurses) with an ostomy or two.

I'm guessing we wash our hands WAY MORE than 'normal' people...just pay attention next time you're in a public restroom...many leave without washing!!!! YUK!

How true this is ... I am much more hygienic than my colleagues at work and it's disgusting! I don't let anyone type on my keyboard :)

 First of all congrats and I can see no reason why you should'nt be in their...glad that your doing well and loving your life.  So many people suffer for so many years without getting proper care or even knowing what they are dealing with and just keep suffering.

For me this forum help me figure out what was wrong with me and I am so so thankful for this forum...everyone here I love dearly as they have all helped and supported me in my deepest darkest hrs.

Tomorrow is going to be a sad day for me and my family as its the one year anniversary of my daddys death.  I have cried almost all day today, you just don't realize just how much it hurts to lose someone you love so dearly.  So I just hope that my dad and my son are in heaven together having a ball...

So wishing you all good digestive health, and a pain free night...
