     Aren't you the one who said your surgeon told you that if they don't sew the anus closed that it will become cancerous in two years?  Where did he get that information?  Just curious.  My surgeon did not sew my anus closed and I had a total colectomy with permanent ileo.  He said there are more complications when it is sewn closed.  However, I still have some discomfort in the anus (I already had an abscess drained from there...wow did that ever hurt) and it still leaks some mucus.

I really don't know if it's an absolute gaurantee but he said the chances were extremely high. He's a really good surgeon, but if you are really scared I would ask around. Maybe call some hospitals and say you are doing a survey or something and maybe they will give you some answers. There may be more complications at first when its sewn closed. Like I have to have a wound vac on all the time until the hole closes. Once it's closed I don't think I have to worry about leakage or anything else.

     EXTREMELY HIGH????  You're scaring the Bejesus out of me!  My surgeon is head of colorectal surgery at Univ of Pa Hospital in Philly and trained at the Cleveland Clinic.  Now why would he want to put me in jeopardy like that????  He's been supercautious with me all along...refused to do a J-pouch because of my age.  Told me my body would tell me when it wanted food and NOT to hurry it along.  Drained an abcess from my anus in September and put me on strong antibiotics for two weeks but said if I got worse to get right back to the hospital but, thank God, I didn't.  I just cannot believe he would leave the anus intact if there were a good chance of my developing cancer.
