Good luck to you, I have had my stoma for 5 months now (urostomy), and for the 1st month, I wouldn't look at it at all. I knew it was coming, so I thought I was prepared. My only hangup after these months, is that I still have issues realizing that it is never going to go away, that it is perm. I am sure that my mind will adjust eventually. Hope your surgery goes well, and that your recovery is smooth.

Thanks everyone for ur support and prayers. This is painful, but better than yesterday. My husband and I looked at the new part of me. I made him look first and he said it isn't bad, doesn't gross me out at all. Then I looked and he was right, it isn't as bad as I thought. I was telling nubby how I felt like a burden to him. So he named my stoma Burt the Burden. Overall it hurts, but I have gas hurts the worst. Burt is tooting all the time, a little embarrassing when the nurse was emptying the bag. This gas will slow down, right? So far I have had the bag emptying three times and pee breaks four times. They tell me it is good everything is working so fast, so that's good! Thanks again my fellow ostomates.

Yep, the gas can be bad to start off with. They gave me peppermint tablets when mine was bad to try and break it up. Or try sucking mints if you're allowed. But it will gradually come out, it is where they inflate the area to get a good look around and some get trapped in the bowel and also because bowel has been handled and sort of goes into shock for a little while. Good news it is already producing stuff, cause mine goes into a major sulk when I have surgery and refuses to produce anything for 4 days!

Awesome it is outputting so quickly. Yes the gas will calm down. Every day it will get better and better.

So, I got to eat solids today! They wanted to see if they could get the stool to get more paste like, right now it is liquidy. But since breakfast this morning I've had more thickened stool already. The gas is better, now I feel like I have air under my ribs and in my shoulder. Only on Mortin for pain now and doing well. And I did take ur advice and have been walking a lot! Docs are talking about sending me home tonight if breakfast and lunch go well. So far so good for breakfast. Didn't go overboard though. Nurses are very impressed as to how fast I am healing. The bag isn't that bad, just don't like how liquidy it is. I have been emptying it my self. They say I have low potassium so they will have to give me more. They said they want me in tip top shape before I leave. Just wanted to keep u all updated. I really don't like that clip thing on the bag though. Oh well, meeting with ostomy nurse today. Hi supernova, great to hear that you are on the right of the op, you sound to be doin fine & to be handling it all well. While the forum is excellent, theres only one way to find out all the details speicific to your own surgery and recovery & that is by experienceing it yourself. there is a lot to learn but its all doable. while there will be 'downish' feelings ahead from time to time, you can expect to feel better as the days go by.

about the clip on the drainable end of the bag, i did use this type in hosp but am now using a Dansaz bag which has a folding part closed securely with velcro --i'm sure other bags use this too - i've put my bags thru big abuse at sport & major DIY projects in the last year & they've never let me down -- i would be afriad of loosing the clip thing or of dropping it down the loo (easily done)

I wear a convatec with a clip. I have tried the velcro type closure but I found it to be messy. You cannot squeeze the sewage out of the bottom of the pouch.

glad your op went well i had mine 3 weeks ago , things do get better i have a velcro bottom bag what i get on with its so easy, at first and sometime now i get alot of liqud and my stoma nurse gave me a thickening powerd to put in my bag .....
wish you well and even tho you might get down day it does get better ,i feel better than i have in in years
