hi all,
Nanci, it's good to hear from you and this time, finally you're home! :) i thought it was a narrowing of the anastomosis site. did they do a baloon dilitation for that? i hope everything works out. the stools is supposed to thicken with time, the small intestine adapts to not having the colon around any more and sort of learns the colon's job. but it also depends on what you eat. do you drink enough water? you must drink at least 10-12 glasses of water a day. if you feel your stools gets too thick or hard, cut off on the thickening foods, like potatoes, rice, peanut butter (can really thicken too much), bread. i hope you're not eating any fiberous foods. those are really not good for you for the next few mons.
as for the MOM, you should try work with your diet. as i said, don't eat too much thickening foods, try softer foods. well, cream cheeses are like soft, but for me, for instanse, they thicken things too much, so if dairy thickens things for you, stay away from it. foods that surely don't cause constipation and are safe are: cooked and peeled carrots and zucchini, cooked and peeled peaches, prunes, strawberries and maybe some other fruits, egges, fish, yogurt, icecream, broth, eggplant salad (w/o the skin) has a really laxative affect on me. other than that, it's a trial and error thing. at the same time, try to cut down the MOM gradually and see what happens.
generally, even if you still need to take any kind of laxative, but it works good, that's ok too. i mean, if there was a laxative that helped me after the colectomy, i wouldnt have gone the ileostomy route, but since nothing worked, i had to go the ileostomy route. there are few of us with CI who had the surgery and still take miralax, like Janiepain, she had her surgery more than 3 yrs ago and she takes miralax and it's all she needs to keep thigs moving. before the colectomy it didn't help, but now it works great and she's happy.
Mary, as far as i know, i don't think they give antbiotics iv on the day of surgery to everyone. i did get antibiotics on the day of my surgery, but that was b/c i have chronic bronchitis. i don't know why they're giving it to you, maybe with some hospitals its a standard..? not sure.
Ali, i hate it that you feel so down.. :( i can really understand all you're saying and can't blame you for feeling this way. when you feel so sick you can't think of anything else but getting better. totally normal. i really hope you find the right dr for you, and your mom will finally dadjust and understand you need surgery and pronto! no point in waisting any more time while you can already have your life back.
gosh, can't wait to hear from Kyle.. hope he's doing ok.
