Odors through the plastic?

Today I was sitting at a work conference when I swear I could smell my pouch. It was subtle, and I doubt it was noticeable to anyone else, but I could tell. I didn't have a filter on my pouch and I was sure it wasn't a leak. I just changed my pouch the night before and really haven't had any leak issues since surgery anyways. So I went to the bathroom at the next break to see what was up. When I emptied the smell was crazy. I have no idea why. The things I ate for dinner last night and breakfast this morning are things I eat all the time with no odor issues. Regardless of the cause, I am thinking that the smell was just too much for the pouch plastic and some of the odor came through. Again, no leaks, no filter, no suspect pouch seams upon examination... what else could it have been? Fortunately, I had some M9 drops in my purse, so I put a few of those in there and it was not a problem again. My output got better smell-wise, I stopped the drops and there is no more odor coming through the bag. It was just really weird.

     I have used the Adapt lubricating deodorant and Reliamed drops, but let me tell ya, nothing works better than a capful of 3% hydrogen peroxide in your bag.  My hubby used to gag whenever he entered the bathroom after I had emptied my bag tongue , but now he said it doesn't have any odor at all! yeah

     I believe there are a lot of people in here that will attest to this.  As a matter of fact,  this forum is where I received the info.

     I use the Coloplast Sensura one piece and only change bags twice a week.  Whenever I empty, I rinse the bag out with warm water a few times then place the 3% hydrogen peroxide in the bag and seal it up.

In the beginning the odor was stronger and hubby used various things with the Hydrogen Peroxide seeming to be the best to neutralize things.

My husband uses the honey lemon eucalyptus cough drops quite a bit each day...with the allergies...and ever since the surgery the tube through the nose he feels the eucalyptus keeps his nose and breathing more open....I swear the eucalyptus does something as he has no strong odor at all if I go in the bathroom after him.

ive had that random smell like that before too.  actually i had it yesterday.  no i dea where it comes from.  ive tried changing the bag right away when that happens before and have never seen a leak or anything that shows where it could be coming from.

i always get that awful smell when i eat fish.

i just reciently had that terrible smell. i posted about it not long ago. nothing helped, even changing the whole appliance didn't make the smell go away. then with the help of some ppl here, i realized it was caused by the fish oil i started to take daily... UGH. but it's all gone now since i decided i'm not messing with fish oil ever again.

Odour can come through the plastic. I only notice it if I don't change the bag (I wear a two piece) when I normally do. It's like the build up of stuff on the inside of the plastic over a few days allows the odour to seep through.

Thanks for the ideas. I really do think the odor was just too much for the pouch to handle:) It was the stinkiest output since surgery and I honestly don't know why as I didn't eat anything unusual or any "stinky" foods. Must've just been an off day. I usually I don't even use odor drops most of the time as I hate having to remember to carry my purse to the restroom and taking the extra time to put them in my pouch... and I really don't think my output smells any more than it did when I used to have regular bms. The old pouch idea is a good idea, but that wasn't it either... I had just changed it the night before and actually still have the same one now and I am having no odor issues. It was just that one time when my output was extra stinky. Guess it is a good reason to justify keeping the M9 drops in my purse just in case my body decides to produce output like that again. There is only so much odor-proof plastic can take I guess!

     Do try the 3% hydrogen peroxide.  You won't be disappointed.

drink about a 1/4 capful of peptol bismol- it binds with the odor molecules and truly dissolves the smell- drink whenever you eat something you know is going to cause bad odor- Try not to takeo n regular basis as some docs frown on frequent use- has been known to cause 'mega-colon' however, people without large intestines I believe are alright-

I take it 3 times a day- has worked wonders- I no longer have odor, wheras before it was really unbearable- but bear i n mind, I don't really care about my health, so I take it regularly- for occasional use however, it should be just fine

Before I get into this post, I need to tell you if I repeat things already written or write things that don't make sense, please forgive me. I'm having serious memory problems. Doc thinks it's due to medication, but I'm on so many it may take time to figure out which one(s). I also lose time--can't recall hours or days.

For example, a week or so ago, I went to bed w/ a small amount of stool in my bag. I woke up at 3am to see if i needed to empty, only to realize i had a brand new bag on--no question! The worst part, I couldn't find the used bag. I checked everywhere in my apartment and even went and checked the whole building, outside area, and my car. No luck. Never did find it.

ANYWAY,

I recently have had the same issues w/ the smell. Can't connect it to anything I ate though.Can't figure out why the smell is there. Even talked to my ostomy nurse and she didn't know.

But she did say one thing…if you have extra supplies that you take with you, store in your car, etc., folding the bags in half (or however you might fold it), can cause problems where the fold is--it can degrade the bag, causing tiny holes which would create odor, but not leakage.

On another note, the hydrogen peroxide has no affect on integrity of the bag? What if you have a filter?
Does it mean less wear time?

I have tried mints, sprays, deodorizers in the bag, and of course room sprays, etc, devrom pills. Nothing works too well. Recently heard about a product where you put a drop into the toilet before emptying that supposedly helps w/ odor. Anyone tried that? Does it work? Waste of $$?

Sorry I had nothing to add, but I do feel for you... I thought I was the only one w/ problems with odor when wearing the bag. I'm constantly sniffing, to detect any odor, and figure out where it's coming from! Odor problems both when wearing the bag and when emptying, really suck!

Sunny, have you tried the deodorizer I've told you about before? I swear by it. I have ZERO odor. I could burp my bag in a full movie theater if I needed to and no one would know it. I squirt a few drops into my bag every time I empty. Amazing!! My husband said its the greatest invention ever. Lol.

Blueheron - it could have been anything... 1) you might have a 'microscopic' leak around your wafter and it's too small to be seen...2) it could the be tail of your bag with a small leak (Velcro?)...again, it won't drip out of the bag, but it's gotten through the Velcro "gate" and seeped to where the odor gets out.....just a few thoughts....
