High stoma output

I was discharged from hospital with my new temporary loop ileostomy this morning. They only let me go because my stoma output was just about ok (less than 1 litre) whereas the previous days it had been way over. However they said if it was to go over 1 litre whilst at home then I would need to go back in. I've been keeping an eye and measuring as much as is possible and this afternoon alone I have emptied over 0.5 litre, am needing to empty every 2 hours or so. I have just got my appetite back properly after the surgery which was 2 weeks ago and the stoma output seemed to be beginning to thicken yesterday but despite trying to eat decent food today including things to 'bulk' up, it is still so liquidy.

I have already been discharged and re-admitted once since the surgery I desperately don't want this to be the case again. But what can I do to try to sort this out?!

Did they give you some lomotil or tell you it's OK to take immodium? My surgeon sent me home with a prescription for lomotil and told me to take one or two if my output was too liquid. It slows your system down, helped a lot.

I hope you don't have to go back to the hospital. I was re admitted too, and it's so discouraging.... hang in.

Its very discouraging and makes you lose your confidence. Its just the fact that I've already been re-admitted once and I would see it as such a failure to go back in AGAIN when the surgery was only 2 weeks ago.

And no they didn't give me any medicines other than my painkillers to go home with, they just said I would have to come back in if it continued.

Immodium and codeine will slow output down. Tramadol will but to a lesser extent. Try eating a low residue diet, no fruit, veg or fibre. Stick to eggs, cheese, chicken, white bread, unrefined pasta or white rice. It is a bit bland but it takes less digesting and as you are only recently out of surgery it will take a while for bowel to settle back down again.

I also have argument with surgeons after I have operations as my bowel goes into shock for 5 days and when it starts working has huge liquid output and they want to keep me in til it thickens. I refuse and say send me home on immodium and codeine, which works for me and after a week or two it is fine again.

I used kind of a modification of the BRATY diet. My sister (a nurse practitioner) told me about it. Bananas, rice, apples (which didn't work out too well for me so I cut them out), toast and yogurt. I made sure to have a yogurt to start the day to thicken things up and a second one just before bed to tighten it up again. Just using the BRTY part of the diet thickened things up pretty well to the point where I didn't have to use Immodium unless I ate something stupid.

Make sure you are taking care of your hydration as that is the biggest danger when you have fast liquidy output. I hope it settles down for you soon. I experienced that in the hospital and I hated it!

Thank you everyone I will try to give these things a go. Why are they doctors so desperate to keep you in when its so liquidy? Is it cos of danger of dehydration?!
