hi hoping,
i had a total colectomy w/ileorectal anastomosis on Aug 2009. my recovery was going good and was able to go back to work after 5 weeks. i'm doing good and happy i had the surgery. what's your diagnosis for having the surgery? are you having open surgery or laparoscopic?
after the surgery you will be in a lot of pain. this is a big surgery. i had an NG tube and catheter for my urine. i had the NG due to ileus. an ileus is a complication in which the whole digestive system just shuts down and basically is paralized. happens a lot with intestinal surgeries, but not everybody gets it. i had the NG for 5 days till my system started to wake up. it's also very common to have problems with urinating on your own after the surgery. i had the catheter for a week after the surgery. but everyone is different and not everyone get these complications.
after the surgery it is very recommended to walk a lot. try to walk as much as you can. and when you're able to start eating, go very easy with food. you'll be told to eat a low residue/low fiber diet after the surgery. the drs and hospital nutritionist will tell you to stick to this diet for only 2 weeks post op, but from my experience and others, it is best to keep it longer, at least 3 months. and when introducing new foods, do it only one food at a time and in a small amount, see how it works. if it agrees with you, try bigger amount. and so on with other foods.
to add to Stephanie's list of things to take with you:
- baby wipes - when you start going to the b/r, you'll be going a LOT, you're bumm gets irritated and TP is just not gentle enough, so you'll need wipes.
- some kind of butt cream, to treat the irritation from going so much.
- slippers.
- a jacket/sweater and some socks - it sometimes can get really cold in those hospital wards.
- some ppl bring their own pillow.
- after you can drink on your own, make sure you have a big bottle of water next to you - b/c of going to b/r so much, you lose a lot of fluids, so you'll have to make sure you're drinking enough. at least 12 glasses of water/day. i also brought my own hebal tea.
don't take granula bars, they are very fiberous and you can't eat fiberous foods after surgery.
i also very stongly advice you to check out the total colectomy parts on this forum. it starts from part 3 up to thirty something. here's the link for part 3:
