My wife has a colostomy 2 years now and has been passing rectal stools and I mean real stoosl 3 to 4 inches long and wide. Surely this is not right

if it's a loop colostomy, then it is normal. how often does she go the regular way? with a loop stoma the stools can go from the upper loop to the lower loop and from there to the rectum. it's nothing to worry about
. most of the stools should come out through the stoma and just a little bit from the rectum. if her output through the rectum is more than the output through the stoma, that wouldn't be right.

Yes, a loop ostomy can cause that to happen. You may want to call her doc to be more comfortable.

Thankyou for your response.
My wife as far as she is aware had a colostomy and not a loop colostomy. Presently she is passing a full bodied stool from the rectum and diahorrea to the pouch. Rather worrying as her bowel has already burst twice and I nearly lost her the last time.

Seen doc. Definately colostomy. Doc wanted to prescribe suppositaries to clear the part of the bowel that hardens the stool. We said we did not want suppositaries we wanted to know why this was happening in the first place. She did not answer.
St Marks did the colstomy 2 years ago. They are reluctant to operate again as after 12 major ops I am like war zone inside.
Worried as after the last bowel burst in 2005 spent 21 days on a life uppport machine. Had 2 heart attacks during this and a trachy. The doctor seems to be of no help at all.
My order for a halo and a pair of wings has been sent. Just hope it don't hurt too much.

Um, I'd cancel that wings and halo order (or put it on hold for a REALLY long time) and find a new doctor. Your question was reasonable, and if she didn't know the answer, she could have told you that and talked about
what she was going to do to find out....
Did you talk to a surgeon or a gi doc?
Are you at a teaching hospital? Can you go to one?
Sorry you've been through so much. With such serious, life threatening issues, you need a doctor who is helpful and who you can trust. Where are you?
Hope something works out for you soon, so sorry you've had to deal with so much.

Thankyou for your kind words, only those that have been there understand. We live in Enfield and supposedly attend the best GP practice in Enfield. At the moment it seems better the devil we know than having to go through it all again.
I will however see if I can see the senior of the practice and see what she has to say. My consultant is at St Marks but we can't get any response from them. All I can do is keep trying. I will but the wings and halo on hold as this year they are green and I don't have a handbag or shoes to match them.

My man works at a hospital and he approached a surgeon and asked if he could have a private word about
me.
The surgeon said it most certainly will be a fistula and that it will need attention.
Now why did the Dr not tell me this rather than wanting me to use suppositaries, or even refer me to a consultant.
I think my man will be having a few words with DR

No words from St Marks Hospital either, makes me feel that no one wants
to give me a straight answer. Like: It's to dangerous to operate or something like that.
Oh well just got to get on with it.
Wish you all the best and thank you all for your concern.
Regards Jeannette
