Total Colectomy with anastamosis

I had a total colectomy nearly 4 weeks ago due to colonic inertia.  I have never been happier! I should have had this operation a long time ago.  I feel soooooo much better.  hardly no pain now, just a little sore at times.  Back at work, eating whatever I want.  I'm not suffering from uncontrollable diarrhea.  I go between 3-5 times a day.  It is soo fantastic.  Just wanted to post a good result for those thinking about this surgery.

Hi Somer

Just a quick question.  I also had a total colectomy due to colonic inertia.  I'm 10 weeks out and still alot of diarreah and (sorry) gas.  You eat anything.... raw fruit and veg?  Do you have normal BM's or loose.  Sorry, I know this is personal.  Just having trouble with diarreah....since the surgery.  Thanks for any info.

I don't have a lot of gas, actually haven't had any gas since surgery.  I have about 3-5 BM's a day, sometimes more, depending on how much I eat.  My surgeon told me that I was in the minority b/c most people have 10-12 BM's after this surgery at first.  I never really ate raw fruits and veggies before sugery, and I still don't now.  I don't really have diarrhea, exactly.  It's semi-formed, definately not a "normal" BM though.  The biggest change for me is getting used to going to the bathroom this much.  Before I was lucky if I had 1 BM every 2 weeks.  How often did you go before your surgery Sommer?  Just curious.

About the same, 1 every 10-14 days, and usually with the help of something...Lax, suppositories, stool soft, ect.  You are very lucky.  Sounds like things are going well!

Having surgery on Tuesday, April 12th, very anxious about hosptial stay and recovery, had a resection in 02, rectocele repaired this past January, NOTHING HELPS, Doc said he will leave 10 inches, so I hope I won't have too much of an adjustment, just going will be SHOCKING, any advice is appreciated.

I have been suffering with constipation for years.  I have seen several docs and none of them could ever give me an accurate explanation of what was going on or any provide me with any relief.  I recently changed docs once again and have found a doc that has really taken an interest in my case.  I have had alot of tests done over the years.  I have taken just about every medicine on the market and not mucy works.  They finally have told me that I have severe colonic inertia and a rectocele (sp?) and have advised me to have a total colectomy and rectocele repair.  I am only 32 years old and am not married, have one child, and had to have a hysterectomy (about 1 1/2 years ago).  I am really scared to have any more surgeries.  I know that I can't keep going on being misreable like this.  I guess the risks scare me a little, like possibility of having a bag, the surgery not correcting my problem, etc.  Does anyone have any insight for me?????

Cheryl,

Read through the posts about total colectomey.  I think it's the first or second one.  It's about 3 pages and there are a lot of questions asked and answered.  Hopefully it will help you get some answers.  Sommer

Does anyone know of anything other than a total colectomy to treat colonic inertia?
