antibiotics with ileostomy.. do we absorb??

Been struggling with a sinus infection which won't shift.. had a course of antibiotics, but it doesn't seem to have done anything.

It may be co-incidence of course, and I just need a different or second course, but wondered if due to the ileo, we don't absorb as well? The course I had was just regular white tablets, not capsules. The speed of my output seems to have really increased lately too.

I'm seeing GP tomorrow, but wondered if liquid antibiotics or a stronger dose is required? not entirely sure my GP will know... :-/

I know for sure I"m not absorbing my contraceptive pill.. so wondered if this is the same?

Does anyone have experience of this or know a solution? thanks Sarah x

Hi Sarah,
Most antibiotics can give you diarrhea...that's common for me. I'm on them right now as well and I am not nervous about absorption. It was really big pills, so I cut them in half to increase absorption.

You may have just developed immunity.

I took a 2 week course of anti-biotics for a toe infection about 6 months ago, i had hardly no changes to output,maybe just a tad runnier but they never worked as a month after that i had the toenail removed as it got worse.
So i now have 2 parts of my anatomy missing :-)

so it sounds as if antibiotics just run right thru you??? Why don't the doctors give you liquid ones? Hhm. I just read something about meds & an ileo, how you can really only take certain types, etc.

I have to be careful with antibiotics as certain ones really upset my system and give me stomach ache and D. This is probably caused by the Crohn's rather than the ileo though, so I tend to stick to the ones we know upset me the least.

     about a month after my operation last year, I had a UTI.  The doctor had me on two different antibiotics and neither upset my system or output.  I am allergic to penicillin and Cipro gave me terrible body aches but other than those two, every other antibiotic is ok.

Thanks everyone.. I'm not sure what's gone on. I've had so many over the last year (probably 10 x oral courses, plus 5 IV courses) it's not surprising they're not working. I think I'll have to try something from a different group of antibiotic and hope that helps clear it up. Will see what GP has to say tomorrow.

Got a new course of a different antibiotic from GP.. will see how that goes. He said that there shouldn't be any absorption issues at all and having an ileo shouldn't affect anything or change the way any medication works.. when I pointed out that my contraceptive pill isn't working, he then backtracked and said that was absorbed in the colon!

I'm really confused about all of this absorption business.. and how do we know if we do or don't absorb stuff as well? as far as I understand, the colon absorbs water and electrolytes and the small bowel absorbs everything else. Hence why we all need more fluid and electrolytes.

I have concerns about deficiencies of nutrients and have tried taking liquid multivitamins, but it whizzes through and is in the bag in 30 minutes. How can that be absorbing properly?

I guess we're all different, but I do know that painkillers aren't as effective as they were before I had the ileo.

It's all very confusing!

@Ironmum The only thing they told me was to never let yourself get dehydrated and eat lots of salt because they're both normally absorbed in the large colon. From what I understand, everything else is taken in the smaller colon.

I started an antibiotic this morning and have emptied my bag several times with watery stool; therefore my reason for finding this site. :-)

I had a bout of pneumonia about three weeks after my operation that gave me a temp ileo (yeah, when it rains, it pours). I had both IV antibiotics while in the hospital and horse pill antibiotics when I went home and they were not a problem for me.
