Update on my wound

Just wanted to let everyone know how I am doing.

In case some of you don't know I have been battling a non-healing wound from my rectum/anus removal since June of LAST year. I will refresh you guys on my treatments and progress.

I had tried all of the treatments available from the hospital. (Calcium algenate, Silverdine, wound vac etc...)

The wound was about 6cm deep and then went to over 7cm.. and hadn't healed whatsoever. I saw 3 wound care nurses and my surgeon... My surgeon then sent me to plastic and reconstructive surgery. The new surgeon said there wasn't much he could do as far as reconstructing it because if I am not healing now, the surgery might fail. He put me back on silverdine and that didnt' do anything either.

I ended up doing a lot of research online and found a product called Microcyn and read people raving about how it was healing their non-healing wounds. I asked my Dr for a prescription and I started using it in July. Within a few weeks I could feel the wound getting slightly smaller.

I just went to the Dr on Friday where they measured it and it is now 3.5Cm!!!

Looks like it's working, slowly but surely.

I can't wait to get my life back. This not being able to sit, having to be packed and not being able to work thing is killing me.

Anyways just thought I would update in case anyone was wondering.

Awesome news Brian, congratulations! Thanks for the update. Very glad to hear that the microcyn is working so well. Hope it keeps working so you can get back to your life.

I posted earlier-- I am going to need surgery next week.... sigh. Seems I have a bit of small intestine poking out of my wound.... don't think microcyn can help w/that.

How did that happen??? So sorry to hear. I know that my wound was so deep that there was only a 1cm or so between my intestine and the hole. I was always afraid that they would poke through while measuring it.

I need to get a ct tomorrow so they can get a better sense of what's going on. My cr surgeon said it's really weird, never happens except w/really old people. She thinks this is why the wound hasn't been healing.... I had an abscess a bit after surgery, and she thinks that it weakened the muscles so the small bowel could fall in some.... but they were just poking it w/q tips and giving me different dressings and creams...... never thought it could be something that bad making my little wound not close.... not sure why it feel down more, but now they can see it, couldn't before.... but it's clearly not something anyone would look for.

I went in today to see the plastic surgeon thinking it was going to be no big deal, as last time he said the wound was getting better.... supposed to go to Chicago on Fri and they said I had to cancel the trip, can't wait..... kind of in shock.... I mean, it's been going on for 7 months and now it's urgent?

My wound was only 1.5 cm two weeks ago.....

She said she wants nothing in the wound and to avoid doing anything strenuous.

Nice to be special, huh? She started w/those dreaded words, "This is interesting." Going to be something like a 4 hour surgery, where she has to put my small bowel back in place so it'll stay there and then the plastic surgeon will sew up the wound.

Brian, i'm so glad to hear the microcyn is helping! it amazes me how come the drs havn't offered it so far and you had to find out about it on your own. it's been so long for you, i'm sure you really want to get on with your life. hopefully things will start working out at last. keep us posted!

blueglass, i'm so sorry you have to have more surgery.. i was so glad to hear your last update on the wound, and now another surprise. i know nothing about these wounds, as i didn't have my rectum removed and i'm so sorry you have this complicaton now. thinking of you and hoping all goes well!

     Thank God for the internet huh?    That is how I found my surgeon, online, because my GI doctor told me he didn't "know" any good colorectal surgeons rolleyes .  He just wanted me to continue being a guinea pig.  Now I am glad he didn't refer me to a colorectal surgeon..lol.

2b- Yeah it's weird that it's such a wonderful thing and a lot of Dr's don't use it. My Dr said they used to use the non-prescription version but the hospital just stopped using it for no reason. (sounds political to me since there are no side effects EVER reported)
He also asked me what kind of food I eat and if I take vitamins etc.. I told him that i just started drinking Ensure about 3 weeks ago.. He seemed to think that is what is helping m wound close. lol! He told me to also start taking some B Vitamins. He wouldn't really tell me which ones are the best, but said any of them will do. Or I could do a multivitamin.

it scares me to think that there are lots of things drs don't tell us about. i hope it all works out for you perfectly and for good! let us know pls!
