Was his issue just the abscess (not that that isn't debilitating in itself!) or does he have another underlying disease? Is he on any medications? Has he had any blood work done recently?
Yes, he had surgery for prostate cancer 6 weeks prior to this incident. He seemed to be recovering okay, then BAM, all of a sudden he developed a high fever, nausea, etc. He was sweating profusely and felt so weak he could hardly walk. I rushed him to the ER and the drs there discovered the abscess. They drained about a half gallon from the abscess but he continued to run a high fever despite all the mega doses of antibiotics he was given. They had no choice but to do surgery to save his life. Even after the illeostomy he developed two more abscesses which had to be drained. It was a mother's worst nightmare! He was due to begin radiation in September because his post op biopsy from the prostatectomy showed the cancer had spread to the bladder neck. However, that had to be postponed due to the abscess. He's scheduled to return to his urologist this month to see when they can begin radiation. Once that is finished the surgeon plans to reverse the illeostomy. He has a long road ahead of him and I am very concerned. I'm trying to do everything I can think of to help with his recovery. No, he's not on any medication at present. He goes for a yearly physical and that's how the cancer was discovered. For a man who has never been sick in his life he is handling this pretty well. It's me that's falling apart!
