Those with Crohn's & J-Pouches . . . How Can That Be?

I have seen a couple of posts lately from folks with Crohn's and either already having a J-Pouch or planning on having a J-Pouch.   How is that possible?

I thought that if you had Crohn's that you could not have a J-Pouch due to the chance that Crohn's may return.

Just wondering ~ ~ ~ ~

I have a facebook friend who was diagnosed with UC....had j pouch surgery....then after found out that her dx was actually Crohn's. So now she has a j pouch and takes Humira for the Crohn's. I don't know of the surgery being done knowing someone has Crohn's. That's a good question. I was always told that j pouch surgery is only used for UC.

There a some cases where they will do jpouches on Crohn's patients. I think when it's found to be limited to the rectum-only.

I am one of the ones who have crohns and a j pouch. from the what the surgeon said this situation is very rare. But in my case everything lined up just right and i don't have a history of crohns in my small bowel so the hope is there that i will be ok. it had been confined to my rectum and large bowel. unfortunately i'm told that i will have to be on medication for the rest of my days but if it all works out, i won't mind. :)

I'm not naive though. A large part of me believes that it will return in some way down the road. I can only hope it does not.

My surgeon told me a j pouch was a possibility if someone w/Crohn's had a) a pristine ileum and b) an uninflamed rectum. I had a, but not b. This does contradict what suebear said, though....
