What about a research paper on your own body perception?It's changed, hasn't it, and you accepted your stoma very very quickly.
If it's really a research paper, then it means you have to find primary sources, which means medical books.
Now I just reread the entire threat here. Yeah, you want to write about your personal experience with it. I would take some aspect of my personal experience and write about it as a subject, research the subject and write about it but without writing about myself in a way that makes me the subject. For me the subjects could include: Ostomy and body image, or, the psycological adjustments (loss, mourning, chaos) that a person has to make when they go through this experience (no one at school would ever have imagined anything like that). Depression as response to body-changing surgery is also good. I think you will find that 5 pages is really not enough. I always have a problem with writing only 5 pages.
