how long were you in the hospital for?
how was the dr with regards to seeing you in the hospital and taking calls after out?
did you have to have a tube in the nose through the throat( that freaks me out)
what is the long term prognosis with the J Pouch...can it survive for 50-70 years? i am only 28 and worry about long term
anything else i should know about or ask i am so freaked out

1. I was in the hospital for 8 days for step 1 and 4 days for step 2.

2. The whole surgical team was great and either Dr Goldstein or Dr. Isenberg was in to see me every morning along with the interns. After I got home I called with questions a few times and a nurse always got back to me right away.

3. I did not have the NG tube thank goodness.

4. I asked about the shelf life of my J pouch and they told me it's good for the long haul. My sister has had her J pouch for 20 years now and she has no issues at all with it. In fact she just had her bi-annual scope and her doc said her pouch looks fabulous.

5. I was freaked out too believe me. You just have to get thru it an it's all worth it in the end. I was so sick and miserable with UC that this surgery has been such a blessing. Did you like Dr. Goldstein? Did he explain it all well to you?

he explained a good amount to me. the tough part about my situation is in colonscopies my colon doesn't look that bad (mild-moderate) but my symptoms are major. I go 10-20 times a day with blood and dont really feel comfortable going anywhere. I have had UC for over 3 years and never been in what they call for remission for anything more than maybe a month. After explaining this to him he said its definatly something we should consider. I am kinda a baby and own my own business so i am weighing out all options before going ahead. He told me its typically 5 days in the hospital for first surgery and 3-4 for the second and that the second takes place 5-6 weeks after the first.

The NG tube totally freaks me out and i saw some people that had the surgery have it...why some and not others?

I don't know why some people need that tube and some don't. I don't know much about it.

Your symptoms sound bad like mine were. At the end I couldn't even leave the house without having an accident. It was bad. Funny how your scopes show that your colon is mild/moderate. Mine looked like hamburger meat.

I know it's a tough decision. I just wanted to get it over with and put it all behind me. I didn't want to think about it any longer. I was rough to get thru but I would do it over again in a heartbeat. The first surgery was the toughest. Take-down was actually very easy.
