these teachers really dont understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so i had eca testing today and when i was done i asked to go to the bathroom (in the mall the school is right next to it) my teacher was like why doo you have to go to the mall im like i have a bag! (though: if they would have paid attention they would have known) any way i went and when i got back they called me to the office and was like you are probally not gonna make it . I already had a bad morning and now this are you serious im gonna finish like all my stuff by thursday thats how MAD I AM!!!!   omg they are so doubtfull ALL OF THEM

Jackie, did you get a note from your doc and show these idiot teachers your bag or a picture of it? They need a visual aid. I WAS a teacher and had kids with gut issues. They had blanket permission from me to give me "the nod" and leave for the bathroom whenever they needed to. None of them ever abused the privilege.

As someone now with a bag, I cannot go back to teaching as I would have to leave the room too often with kids unattended. Illegal. MY LTD Co. nor my docs got this point. Not sure why, but they didn't. Not sure how my docs missed this point but I guess they don't like people to get LTD ins.

Allswell, I don't think you can measure your output after surgery based on before (even in remission). With a colon that's working, you absorb a lot of liquid and it concentrates the output, so people only have to go 1-3 times a day or so.... without a colon it comes right out from the small intestine, so there's a lot more water. On the other hand, with ibd, you are often getting rid of all that output in smaller quantities than what accumulates in the bag.

One important thing to note is that your small intestine learns to absorb water (like the colon is supposed to), but that takes some time. I am ten months out of surgery, and I am starting to notice a real difference in how often I have to empty. It's down to about 5-7 times a day, and I've even slept through the night a few times.

For me it's getting reasonably predictable when I'm going to need to empty -- generally once in the middle of the night, once when I wake up, once later in the morning, then not again til later in the afternoon, dinner time, and bedtime, with maybe one more thrown in between dinner and bedtime. I'm not working now, but only two of these are during the work day for me when I go back....

Also, emptying is really fast..... some people just do it every time they have to pee. It's way different than w/IBD where I'd spend a half hour in the bathroom then need to go back in two minutes later etc....

My son is a freshman in HS, was diagnosed with severe UC last February and had his colon removed on August 30. He has an ileostomy and is scheduled for phase 2 Jpouch surgery (of 3 phase surgery) on Dec 23.  He missed the first three weeks of his freshman year and so far this year has missed over 35 days of school, and been hospitalized 6 times in the last 9 weeks (due to weird complications and kidney stones).  

Last year when he was first diagnosed and I was so stressed out about his going back to school, and his GI told me about the 504 Plan.  It is the Federal Disability Act for Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.   I inquired about it with the school and he qualified for this plan.   It gave him a permanent "no questions asked" ability to leave the classroom ANY TIME he needed to. If he has to leave the classroom during a test, it "stops the clock" until he is able to return to class.    It also gives him extra time to make up missed assignments and provides tutoring when needed if he misses too much school due to his condition.  His teachers are all aware that he is under the 504plan and have been totally accomodating. I would inquire about it with your physician and can tell you where to find the forms online.

I am not sure if you are in HS or college, but it is worth looking into. He is able to leave class if needed to empty his bag (and can go to the clinic without having to use the "general population" bathroom).  It has given him a better comfort zone for dealing with his condition.   

I wish you luck with your next surgery.  we are starting out 10 day countdownto his next one.  My son was so glad when he could stop taking all the pills every day.  Now he takes ZERO meds and cannot wait for the end result of phase 3 surgery.

thanks caligirl83 i assume you live in aclifornia i could be wrong lol i stay in indiana. I LOVE THE FACT I GOT THE SURGERY (dont hesitate) for me emotionally it has been difficult some days are just harder than others buty i can eat anything now and thats what i love. I really think my problem is not physicall but a mental disbility if that makes sence but there are days i physically am worn out. Im gonna wait for the jpuch for a while until i am emotionally ready and i have no idea when that would be.

ABSOLUTELY get a 504 plan. It will make your life so much easier.your principal needs to know you have a medical disability...and that you are not just someone who needs to go to the bathroom a lot

During certain tests, for legal reasons they cannot let students leave the room. A 504 will grant you special
Permissions. I also suggest you ask to use the bathroom in the nurse's office. Make your life as easy as possible..there is no need to struggle through school
