Yep, the surgery is tomorrow.  Thanks everyone!  Leaving after lunch today for the trip up there whenever one gets off of work.  Last night, I was just thinking; I sure hope this is the it for me finally.  Tired of living in constant gas, bloat, nausea, pain; and just trying to eat because I have to.  I want to enjoy food!  Time to live a brand new life!!! =)  I'll post again whenever I am to, but it might be a few days.

Kyle - we are all anxious to hear how you are doing.

I haven't been on here in ages but I have had a spare few hours here at nuclear med with my daughter for her gastric emptying study. Kyle, she fits your story to a T. Not too far off from my story but I hope she can get this all taken care of now and not when she is my age. (she is going to be 18 on 2/8).

I hope pacemaker can give closure to this part of your life and start fresh.

Hi Hodaya, not exactly, all I know is that things are not speeding along. BUT I did have a friend whose son got a kidney transplant and the thing did not work at all for TWO whole weeks. THEN all of a sudden it kicked in and the guy is just fine now. Lets all pray. Rosemary

Hi everyone,

I am sure you are worried to death about me!  This recovery is very rough, and I am still in so much pain!  I ended up staying in the hospital from Friday, Jan 20th to Thurs., Jan 26th.  While I was in the hospital, I did have a lot of complications peeing, which I did have some issues a few years ago, and I saw a local urologist.  I never thought too much about it, but I do only let out little trickles here and there, or I can't get a good steady stream.  All the IV fluids they injected in me really caused me to retain water.  I was self-cathed a lot in the hospital.  The nurse came in one morning, and she said did you pee?  I said no, and she self-cathed out of me more than 600cc.  The doctor did want me to follow-up with a local urologist, and I saw the PA yesterday where I went before.  She didn't do that much besides saying, oh goodness, you are very swollen.  I am scheduled for an urodynamic test on Feb. 14th. 

I am just having a hard time moving around right now.  My tummy is so swollen, you can see where the pacemaker is, and my face, feet, and ankels are all swollen.  I probably have about 10 pounds of extra weight on me just due to this fact.  It is even killing my back at times!

As far as appetite, I am not sure if I have noticed too much of an improvement.  I still pretty much want to stay to the same foods I was eating.  I tried to eat a little more on Sunday, then I felt so sick going to bed, and I felt pressure all the way up to my esophagus.  I know it will take time, and I expected the swelling in my abdomen, but I can't stand all this pressure in my face, ankles, and feet right now just making it hard to move around!  I think it makes me feel worse.

I did call the surgeon's office again last night, and the nurse was going to ask the surgeon again about my swelling and extra retention.  He kept on telling me it will go down over time, but I am still concerned!  Has anyone on here suffered with so much swelling and retention after surgery?  How long did it take for it to go down? 

One nice thing about being up there, I got to meet Christine, and she is wonderful.  She came to visit me plenty of times, and she brought me snacks and things of what I might be able to get down in me.  :-)

And you, my dear, are MORE wonderful!!! :-) I miss you terribly and wish you nothing but a smoother recovery!

You were trying to eat, your tenacity is fantastic. The improvement you made last week was impressive, so you are showing signs!

If the retention is still concerning, I'm glad you called the surgeon. Your swollen ankles and abdominal area are, even last week, certainly making things hard for you. Hope he can shed more light and more definite answers. And I think you see him again next week. That's all the PA said?

Kyle, great to hear from you! Have your doc do kidney function tests. This is not normal to be retaining fluid and not peeing after so long. Glad you checked in. I really hope that gastric pacemaker works for you and you can get this kidney thing straightened out. My word what a time you had and are having.

Spoke with my doctor today. Sometimes post op, if operation goes on to long, the patient has to be catheterized if they are having pain/can not urinate. You had this following surgery. But by the time they catheterized you, you had already had edema (excess water). And the high drip afterwards didn't help, glad when they finally stopped it. This edema has not subsided and it's been week and a half. I hope you can move forward with the proper care for this, sounds like this has been an issue. :-) Hope your having a better day!!!!!!

Kyle, I hope you get some answers and come away from your appt. confident in your new surgeon. If not, I can recommend Dr. Hurst at the U of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. He a specialist in gastro surgery. I'm a big fan of doctors connected with respected teaching hospitals and if you're in the Chicago area, U of C should be pretty convenient for you. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

Brian84: my doctor's are also at U of C! Russell Cohen and my surgeon is Dr. Hurst. Have been a patient at U of C for more than 20 years and plan to continue even if I have to fly across the country to get there. They're one of the best in the country.
