Hi there,
I too have my rectum and the resulting diversion colitis. My doc says that the rectum will eventually have to go, but that I can take some time. I will probably have to have a scope every year to make sure that nothing is brewing in there cancer wise. In the meantime I use a steroid foam (the name escapes me now) that is very effective at keeping the diversion colitis in check. It is expensive, but I am happy to pay it. Did the surgeon leave yours in in case you want a jpouch? That is why I still have mine. Anyway, I would discuss with your doc the idea of having a scope every now and again and when he/she thinks it needs to come out, if ever. Good luck!
