Yes, you absolutely can. Pretty early on I had to quit taking any kind of Imodium, etc because I was getting too slowed down and thickened and having trouble emptying. The biggest thing that helps me is lots of fluids with meals. They tell you not to drink a lot when you eat, but I think if you have slow transit you really need to. Also, just making sure you are getting plenty of water throughout the day can make a big difference. It sounds like you can add some more foods to your diet, too instead of trying to eat only/mostly thickening stuff. Just start with small portions and go from there.
If you feel like it's difficult to go, don't strain. I find drinking some hot tea or coffee and waiting awhile and then trying again usually does the trick. If I try too hard to "work things out" I can get a tiny bit of tearing/bleeding and then things sting and burn later. Bidet helps a lot with this though.
