My husband Jared and I have been married for 2 1/2 years. 5 years ago he had his entire colon surgically removed becuase of severe ulcerative colitis. It was a long recovery period and although he had a sac while he was in the hospital they gave him a j-pouch. During the surgery and recovery period he lost over 20 pounds. In five years he had never gained a pound of it back until recently. (He didn't have the weight to lose in the first place) To add on top of that he also has a liver disease called primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver. I am trying to find someone out there who also possibly has these two conditions combined. Because like so many of you he lost the weight, but has never gained it back and his transit time hasn't slowed by much. He has about
7-8 bowel movements a day (about
2 during or right after every meal). We started seeing a nutritionist and a liver/gastro specialist at mayo clinic... and since then he did gain 8 pounds. Which was HUGE for us. But he once again has platoed and seems to keep nothing more on him. I am hoping to find someone who has similar situations. He is only 1 point away from being considered malnurished. And I am sure this is not helping his liver cope with his disease. Any advice for how to get his body to start obtaining more nutriance and put on weight would be greatly appreciated. I am sure that once we can get his body to start taking in nutrients and start gaining weight that his liver condition will follow with improvement.
Here is what we've been trying:
- We have tried seeing a natropathic doctor who recomended a strict diet (which took out a lot of calories) and lots of supplements. This did nothing.
- We went to the nutitionist at mayo clinic where we started to take raw vegies, fatty meats, sugar, and heavy dairy products out of his diet. And replacing them with lots of snacks, lean meats, and 3 ensure per day. This is what made him gain the 8 pounds he has achieved.
- After he gained the 8 pounds he hasn't been able to get any more. We need another 20 pounds on him so now we are adding exercize and weight training to see if we can get the meat on him through muscle mass. We have been at this for 1 week now. I hope it gets us somewhere. (He is also starting to add protein shakes and creatine powder to his diet along with his 3 ensure per day).
- Your suggestions and comments would be appreciated.
