My 20 year old had total colectomy and j-pouch formation December 2011. She was scheduled for takedown this past June but had to cancel it
She has a tiny opening where the pouch was attached with an infection behind it so she's been on antibiotics for 7 months and hopes things will be healed and reschedule surgery for next June.

Today she ran in a Muddy Buddy race (4 miles running with a buddy with 8 obstacles including crawling on her belly thru a mud pit! ) She finished and felt such joy. With U C she could not run more than a few minutes and this was such a milestone even with her complications.
Her ostomy bag was a muddy mess along with everything else but it was a great day.

Wow that's so great to hear that she is getting out and doing things and not letting anything hold her back. So many people think that having an ostomy limits the amount of things you can do, but you can do just about anything. I can remember when I thought I would never get to go swimming again. I didn't for about 2 years and finally did it a few weeks ago. I even went wakeboarding
Did she do the Chicago one? There were a few mud races in the area here and my friends went to one in the south suburbs I think

Brian 84: its great that you are swimming and wakeboarding! That sounds like it could hurt if you landed wrong. Do you wear a protective plastic cover over your stoma. My daughter wears these fairly tight things that are like "spanx" and they make the ostomy bag feel very secure. She ran the Muddy Buddy in Gilberts (far sw suburb of Chicago).

Summerstorm: You are right. Getting muddy looked like so much fun, I'm thinking I'd like to run in one of those muddy buddy races!

Being able to exercise again and participate in sports is such an awesome thing, esp since the UC took them away. If she gets to finally use her j-pouch next year, I hope she won't be limited again.

Sweetpeasmom- I thought the same thing, but my moms friend has made me some belts including one for swimming. Basically this one is a bathing suite material and I can put my bag in it and zipper it up. It can cover up the bag completely which made me happy because I was able to go on my friends boat with just swimming trunks and this belt, without a shirt. I think it adds a little bit of protection and I was also protected with my life vest. I must have faceplanted in the water at least 5 times lol.
If your daughter is interested I can put you in contact with my moms friend. I promise she will like it. I know when I got it I was very impressed and I now go out more and have more confidence.
This is a picture of it laying on the floor, but its actually tight and secure around my body when I wear it. I wear t-shirts all the time so I was worried about being able to see it.
