I want to say that I saw in some of my reading material that the answer to your question is yes. But I don't remember if it was just for a short time period that we are at risk or forever...

Sheesh, can't get rid of a disease forever. You get rid of the disease surgically, you have to deal with surgery issues afterwards. W.T.F.

Somedude makes an excellent point. Get rid of an issue and get stuck with adhesions, the surgically created disease that we are never warned of.

As I am in such trouble with adhesions, I have done a LOT of research. The CURE is light years away. There may never BE any cure but it is being worked on. FOrmation of adehsions is a combination of body inflammatory reactions, what type of surgery done, how it is done (electrocautery causes a LOT of inflammation, how much of it is done. Plus we are never warned. NO surgeon likes to talk about adhesions. Because surgeons are the ones who inadvertently create them. It is a really hush hush issue. In the place you have them Christine, you will likely have this pain issue forever; I sure hope not but sounds like. BE SO GLAD they are not on your small intestine making obstructions or interrupting the function of your small intestine. BUT am sorry to hear about the pain.

I had after that what later was determined unneeded sigmoid resection and pelvic prolapse surgery 2006, 13 months of small bowel obstructions with NG tubes every time I took a bite to eat. ONLY ONE DOC out of 13 nationwide would deal with it. Made me the first stoma took down the adhesions and gave me 4 fabulous years. SO glad I made them fabulous.

WHAT I cannot figure out is WHY after 4 years my stoma would suddenly slam shut with adhesions. Adhesions form 7 to 10 days after a surgery then that is that. So am not sure why I grew adhesions out of the blue 4 years out.

Christine, for part of my interest in the adhesion topic, did you have this pain SINCE your surgery, as I remember you did, but thought it was skin tags. OR is this a new and different pain?

Though I likely will have to have this revised stoma redone, due to half of it slamming shut, and the doc who did it not doing THAT many stoma's unknown to me, BUT I have to give the man credit, he talks openly about adhesions, their dangers of relysing them and the possibility that they will grow back worse. BUT he also does not believe in adhesion barriers. So.......But at least he is up front. At least does not say "It's all in your mind."

That is the worse part about adhesions, nothing that can be done about them, surgically created, the risk not on any consent form, AND not visible on any test. Light haired people more apt to form them than dark haired people with darker maybe not as delicate skin. Has to do with the collagen factor. Just curious Christine are you light haired? I am.

SO want to find a cure. A doc at Children's Hospital in Boston is working on a drug to give to people at the time of surgery so they do not form adhesions. It alters the immune system response but he is trying to find one that does not alter the good healing response. They have it a Pfeizer right now but clinical trials on humans are years out. Has worked well on rabbits. Is called Sutent and is an anticancer drug that would be given in smaller and different doses. That man will win the Nobel Prize if this works on humans!!!!!!!! If available now I would be the first to sign up.

     Marianne, you must have had some cracker jack surgeon !  I suppose all cases are different and maybe the surgeon who operated on you would be in agreement with the one who did my operation, who knows ?  But, we just have to deal with what we've got huh?

     I wouldn't call this pain, I would call it discomfort.  Today, it is not bad at all!  Maybe I sit on my tuccus too much.  It is too darn hot to go walking.

    Yes, I have had different things to deal with since surgery, but they are at least bearable, nothing like suffering with UP.

     ddd45...Yes, I had my rectum and colon removed but the surgeon left the anus open.  about a month post op I did have a hematoma inside the anus which the surgeon drained in his office .  No anesthetic.  Guess he thought that I perservered that NG tube going down a second time a few days post op that I could tolerate the pain of the anuscope and the suctioning of the hematoma.  He then placed me on strong antibiotic regimen for two weeks and I had an allergic reaction to the Cipro.  Whereas, if he had sewn the anus closed, he would not be able to get to that hematoma without cutting through sutures.   His reasoning paid off in that department.  I have skin tags outside the anus which the doctor said was due to the trauma of suffering with UP for twelve years....almost constant diarrhea and bleeding.

     My surgery was done two years ago.  I usually do a lot of walking but this weather has been HORRIBLE....hot and humid and lots of rain.  Today I got my butt in gear and walked around the mall a few times.
