Levofloxacin and Metronidazol together?

Has anyone ever been given this for an infection?  I had surgery on Sept 4th and having complications. My infection in my pelvic area returned. Thsi time it's too small to be called an abscess so no drain required. Didn't expect these tow highly potent drugs!  One is used to treat Anthrax and the plague!

I tend to be very sensitive to high potent meds and I'm also still weaning off Predinsone too!

Anybody have som eexperience with these two drugs together?

     So sorry to hear you are still battling infections!  After Dr. Fry drained the abscess I had inside the anus he did place me on Cipro and another antibiotic which name now slips my mind.  I do remember that on the third day I could barely get out of bed my joints ached so much.  I phoned his office and he told me to get off the Cipro immediately.  I had taken Cipro before and never had a reaction, so maybe it was just the two antibiotics together.  I was then placed on Bactrim and remained on it for ten days.  When I returned to Fry, two weeks later, the infection had gone away.

     Isn't Metronidazol another name for Flagyl?  If you are sensitive to certain antibiotics I certainly would let the doctor know.

Didn't know you had an abscess too! I just sensitive to potent drugs in general. Found out after my first dose of Asacol! When the med comes with a 5 page medical guide and states is used for anthrax and the plague and can cause death...I tend to worry! Also I'm still on Pred and it's supposed to interact wit one of them too. I have a call into the doctor regarding this.

Once I get the go ahead, I'll stray this Sat. First with one then add the second on Sunday to see how I do. I heard from Mike today (Dr. Fry's nurse) He mentioned it can take up to a month to get relief!

I've been on flagyl and cipro together.... it's a very common combination, especially for Crohn's, and I was on pred then too. Flagyl is nasty stuff -- made my mouth taste like metal the whole time I was on it, and it made me nauseous (I got some anti nausea med that helped). It works though.... once they even stopped a flare for me.

It is true the list of side effects is really scary. One thing I found scary is that pred used to give me neuropathy -- my hands and feet were always tingling.... but the neuropathy from flagyl can be permanent. So, I wondered how to tell whether I just had regular pred neuropathy or something scarier.... turned out I was fine though, and the metal taste goes away too.

Good luck w/them. As Christine did, call right away if anything seems wrong.... but keep in mind that you'll probably be fine.

     Bluegrass, if you were on prednisone and had tingling of the hands and feet, your blood glucose levels were probably high.  That is what happened to me back in 2009.  Since both my parents were diabetic I knew the symptoms immediately.  I developed type 2, prednisone induced diabetes and suffered with that until I was finally able to get off the prednisone about six weeks post op.  I also had uncontrollable high blood pressure while on prednisone, with readings of 216/110 more often than not.  Even taking three different blood pressure meds daily had no effect rolleyes .  UGH...I am ever so grateful and happy to be done with UP and the dreadful medications!!!

     Lois, Mike must have thought I was a real pain in the butt because I phoned quite frequently with post op issues.  He was really nice about it though.  Let me put your mind at ease by telling you there is light at the end of the tunnel.  It took a good year and maybe a bit more before I felt 100%.  However, when my daughter got married this past Sept 29th ...I was a real party animal yeah !!!  I would NEVER have been able to enjoy myself like I did at her wedding...to be honest, I most likely wouldn't even have lived to see her married.

Christine, interesting.... nobody every talked about that w/me... just looked and my blood glucose was above normal much of the time when I was sick (not sure when I was on pred exactly then). It's been normal for a while now though.... one of the reasons I had surgery was they said it was when not if I'd get diabetes or glaucoma or something else.... sorry you're dealing w/that.

     OOps...I said bluegrass....I meant blueglass..lol.  I am not dealing with high blood pressure or diabetes anymore.  After I got off the prednisone, everything returned to normal tongue .   Even my blood pressure, which was a major concern of my surgeon's, is very well controlled with only one 25 mgm pill of Toprol xl per day.

     My former GI doctor (I say former because I never returned to him after my operation) called prednisone the best/worse drug...and how true that is!!

Well I started the Levo last night. Didn't sleep too well and woke up a bit wacked out...unfocused. Add the Metro this morning. Got a bit of a headache. I felt better without the drugs but at least it's only 2 weeks and hopefully this will be the end of it!

I've been on very serious antibiotics for abscesses and infections also. And like you I am very drug sensitive and have real serious allergies to many including penicillen(s). I don't consider flagyl (metradinozile) a real potent/biggie one though. Been on that lots for cdiff and uc and post surgery stuff. I've been on vancomycin, cipro, aztreonam and two kinds at a time usually. All killer stuff. And in iv form in the hospital and picc line at home. I figure I have to try to duke it out with the antibiotics no matter the side effects because the infections are a worse risk to your health.

for me.. flagyl makes me not eat. cipro gives me horrid joint pains. Overall the high potent ones make me feel very very sick and "out of it", not just physically, but mentally.

I try to not read those papers that come with the meds anymore. It just scares me. I try to differentiate between being sensitive and the drug "bothering" me verse a real allergic type of reaction. So I go ahead and take the stuff, but if a reaction becomes severe.. .like a rash.. or difficulty breathing then I let the docs know and have them change them up.

hope what you were prescribed works for you and you can get rid of this infection/abscess.

Oh that vanco is awful stuff.... I've been on it too.... the nurses call it drano. It'd blow out a vein after two IV's....looked like a junkie (I didn't get a picc line, would if I had it again).

I had never had penicillin because both my parents are allergic. At my first surgery they asked if I wanted to check it as the penicillin when they had reactions (in the 1950's) was a different type and it's not necessarily genetic anyways.... said it would be perfect, as if I had a reaction they'd catch it right away and I wouldn't even know.... well, turns out I'm not allergic to it. So that spared me vanco a few times....

But I had a fever of 104.6 and nothing was getting it down....so I was blasted too..... not a good feeling.

blue.. so true about the pencillen and its relatives. My infectious disease doc at CC told me that most people that say they have penicillen allergies from when they were kids, really don't have them. .. something like 90percent. So they retested me, cause they really wanted to give me penicllen or one of its close relatives... well low and behold..  I still was seriously allergic. Guess my mom was correct when she said.. always always tell everyone you are seriously allergic to penicillen. I was already on a picc for TPN and cipro and flagly and potassiaum and  blood draws and other junk.. as I had  been in the hospital for so long before they added that vanco. Vanco really sucked because they had to check "vanco" levels every day once I got home  and adjust for the evil poison!!!

I think I had all those things in a regular IV -- and if I had potassium and IV pred, had to have two different IV's, as they crystalize together.... wow, am I glad those days are gone.

My mom had some kind of flu or cold or something in the 1950's when she was a kid.... they kept giving her penicillin, and she was sick the whole summer, until they realized that the penicillin was the problem (so it wasn't some anaphalactic shock reaction or anything). My dad had some kind of reaction as a kid to a sulfa penicillin drug, and they never even worked out which drug was the problem.

It's a drag that you're one of the 10% on penicillin, but good that you know it....
