The last thing heard from you was cipro for pouchitis. Hopefully you're off to Florida, but drop a note here soon and let us know how you're feeling.

Thank you for checking on me. Still on both Cipro and Flagyl. Completed 10 miles in Florida only to develop pneumonia 18 hours later. I was training for this half marathon to celebrate being "free" of chronic illness. I didn't realize that pouchitis is considered a chronic illness. It is a little depressing. I had a fever of 104 yesterday. No fever today but somewhat weak. Need a little encouragement.

I am making all those encouraging and sympathetic sounds and now I would really like to know what possessed you to go to Florida when you must have known you were not yet quite up for that? You were not supposed to do those 10 miles. We are supposed to know that doing things like that when we have pouchities will result in consequences. But ok, what's done is done so I will shut up. Pouchitis is not chronic, at least not necessarily. There are a few individuals who unfortunately have what they call chronic pouchitis. You have not had yours long enough for it to count as chronic. Pouchitis happens, is treated and goes away, and could happen again at any point down the line. I do not speak from experinece so others will probably chime in here.
If I may say so and risk crossing boundaries here, I have the feeling that your illness is able to loiter because there is something in your head you are not dealing with. It's holding things up, things that are otherwise great and promising. Naturally, I again haven't a clue as to what I'm talking about. In any case, It is very good to know you are basically OK.

My niece's wedding was in Florida. We had a huge family reunion with all of my siblings, their children and grandchildren and, of course, my mother, the great-grandmother. Family means a lot to me so it was very important that I be there. It was a once in a lifetime event to have all of the four generations together.
The 10 miles did not hurt at all and I cut 4:30 off my pace so I was very happy. I increase my mileage 10% per week so I have been slowly working up to this. The doctor treating the pouchitis said it was ok to train as long as I didn't have a fever for 48 hours. He'll be joining our group for an 11-miler Saturday so I don't think the training is a problem or he would tell me.
I always catch colds in Florida. The huge difference between the weather outside and the freezing air conditioning inside leaves me sweating and then chilled. I do not know why this one turned into pneumonia so quickly. I have asthma and do easily develop lung infections but never that fast. I am very glad to be back on the West Coast where the humidity is low and there is no air conditioning where I live. My lungs are clearing and the fever broke yesterday. My lungs are already back up to 85% of capacity. Should be back to 100% by Saturday.
There are probably lots of strange things in my head but I would not have a clue as to what would effect my immune system.
I hope the pouchitis is not chronic. I keep reading that pouchitis is always considered chronic and that if you are not showing signs you are simply in remission. I guess I'll just roll with whatever happens and not worry about it. I have started taking VSL#3. Perhaps it will help.

Even though UC is or is considered to be a genetic defect in the immune system (my GI said), I still think that everything going on in our heads will effect the immune system. It's all these things together that get expressed in becoming ill with something. I still think you should do bed rest until the pouchitis is gone and you are off the antibiotics.
Today at work there was a press conference. My job is only until the end of the month, and I'm working chiefly from home until then, but I had to supervise the foreign press at the conference. It began at 10 in the morning and I'd had breakfast at 6:30, and so at 10:30 I ate two huge croissants that were part of the catering there. I am deeply regretting that, have had diarhea for several hours and am hoping it is over tonight and will not continue for a week, as it did in September. My present GI ruled out pouchitis via blood test results at the time. I keep learning again and again not to eat anything with a lot of butter.
In any case, it is still wonderful that you could see your whole family all at once.

Your poor thing! For me anything with a lot of fat in it creates problems. I hope you are better by morning. I am doing as much bed rest as I can stand but I am on antibiotics for 20 days which is more than I can afford to spend in bed. Honestly, I am doing much better but I will follow your advice as best I as I can.
What blood test was done to rule out pouchitis? So far I have not had any blood tests.
It was wonderful to see everyone and to see physical traits of well-loved dead relatives show up again in young children. There was a four-year-old girl who looked just like my favorite great-aunt.
